My son was on Prednisone 5ml=15mg twice a day for a month. Today we had our month check up and his doctor lowered it to 71/2ml roughly 20mg every other day. Does this seem like the norm?
He has 0 protein in urine.

I guess they all do it differently. After we'd been on the initial high dose for 6wks in which time he went into remission, we then stayed at the initial high dose but went to every other day. Then after a month it was lowered and every other day. Every month it was lowered and took 7mths to come off (started at 50mg per day).
What was the initial amount of prednisone they started your child on. Just thought that the dose was kind of low after 1 month. I have a great Doc but just figured he miscalculated the dose. Thanks for your reply. Shawn
It depends on the weight of your child as to what they start them on. My son was 25kg and they work it on 2mg per kg of weight hence his 50mg (equiv. to 10mls for his brand of prednisolone). So he was on 50mg every day for 6wks, then 50mg alternate days for a month and then went down to 40mg alternate days, then 32.5mg a/d, 25mg a/d, 15mg a/d, 7.5mg a/d then off.
Yes this is normal. Prednisone is a hormone that we make on our own. Unless we take them in high doses for medical reasons, thereby causing the body to stop the production of this hormone . Because of this the doctor will taper the person of off the pred, in order to prevent any further medical complications .
They have to start the dose off then slowly taper it, they cannot take him off of it all at once.
Kiwi ever have a day when tapering down that u had a solid trace on the albustix? This is quite confusing to me i Know he is about a week off the 30 mg a day to the 20mg every other day. Morning urine was a dark yellow cloudy and first time i saw a trace on the stick. Tested 45 min later and it was less than a trace. I know they recommend the first urine but does a little later have any signifigance or is the result completely nill?
No, sorry I haven't had that experience while tapering. However, last week my son (who has been off all meds for 4.5mths now), randomly started showing a trace on the stick. Over the next 4 days it swung up and down (he wasn't sick at the time nor any other reason for it). I know they say not to test during the day, but I was just out of interest and would notice it up first thing and then down during the day and up again etc. How are things now?
