swelling - proteins and/or pred?

0 Recommendations

I have been at 5mg of pred for a month now, YAY! My swelling has gone down a lot.

Two months ago my proteins were 7.5 and I was super swollen @ 20mg of pred.

A few weeks ago when I got down to 5mg the swelling got much better and my proteins were @ 1.

I still have some swelling, esp if I eat salty. I know that is really bad! But it is like crack to me.

My question is, does anyone still swell up after they go into remission or does the swelling take a while to go away once you reach remission or is the swelling supposed to go away immediately once you reach remission?

TIA!
Beth

I think once you are completey off the prednisone
the swelling will improve even more . What works for
me is a very low sodium diet and I drink alot of water.
Which I admit is a hard way to go since most all good
foods are high in sodium.Just got to do the best you can I guess. Good luck to you

When I go into remission, the swelling goes away completely and very quickly. Within days, the swelling is gone.

thanks for sharing! I know the pred made me swell up worse than I was with just the MCD, so I hope that is part of what is causing the swelling.........

anyone have the swelling stay after being off pred and having remission?

Beth, the salt is really bad for you. When you need some spice, try curry powder, or garlic powder, or put a little cheese in the omelette, or on your saltless bread. I am now on 5 mg of prednizone every second day, and my swelling too is going down, yeah! I did have a bout of gout as a side effect of the cyclosporine I'm on, but that is now gone due to a three day 'hit and run" treatment with 50mg prednizone daily.

Yes, the water is very good, I drink at least two liters daily, plus a coffe and a tea. And of course, no salt whenever possible.

Beth I have been off the prednisone since June and I am still swelling. I get up in the morning with tight hands and my feet are swollen. I am on 80mg lasik every day and another water pill every other day. My neph says it is from the protein spilling. I still have a minimal amount in the urine but he doesnt think it is high enough to put me back on the prednisone-thank God. But I can understand how fustrating it is to still be swelling. I keep on buying shoes because none of mine fit right. I have a job where I am on my feet most of the day and I change my shoes three or four times a day.

I think as long as you are on prednisone you will retain water more when you eat salt. I have been without prednisone and do not swell no matter what but as long as I was on Prednisone and for severakl months after I was swelling around my eyes after salt in a high dose. It is like crack to me too. I would eat a whole jar of sour garlic pickles in a day but now do not crave as much. The adrenals also control our salt/water hormone/level and I find I am better with cravings now that I am far away from prednisone and NS. Good Luck. I really hope all goes your way. I don't know why I was blessed to have this all be over in 3 months and yet for you it is continuing. I will just keep praying it all goes away and never comes back

Beth,

I'm in a complete remission. However, because I developed a severe case of Cushings Syndrome with the prednisone use, its taken about 6 months to start to look like me again. I still have traces of swelling every now and then (edema). For that, I take a small dose of lasix. Anyway, make sure you are seeing an endocrinologist while you are tapering off prednisone.

By the way ... I love salt too! I do my best to behave but still slip now and then.

Take care!

Thanks Christi, I got cushings syndrome too from my chest all the way up. I went up about 4 bra sizes. Now at 5mg of pred I think my face is getting slightly better.

What do you see an endocrinologist for? Is that for the bone density?

I am glad you are in remission!! That is wonderful news I am so happy for you! How long did it take and which drugs worked for you?

Steven is now also on 5 mg prednisone every other day and his swelling has gone down too.
He makes sure he drinks a lot of water; we think that helps as well.
