relapsing NS child and getting an H1N1 shot..do you or not?

0 Recommendations

Has anyone gotten the H1N1 vaccine for their neph child while the child is relapsing and on Prograf?
Not that I can find one anyhow, but my son's Dr said get the injectable as soon as possible whether relapsing or not. There are virus's all over school, possibly varieties of H1N1 and many fevers, some of which we have already seen in the household. I am keeping him home until he stops spilling. My son is 8.

HI WorriedmomV-
Our neph told us to get both the seasonal and the H1N2 vaccines for our daughter as well as everyone in the family. Our daughter is 5 and has actually just been testing trace and is on prednisone, prograf, enalopril, but they wanted her to get it as long as she did not have a fever. She got it last Thursday and so far everything seems fine. Good luck finding it! I live in OH and the health department gave them at our kid's schools!

My son is relapsing rigt now though, likely from this type virus form school. He is +2 for the first time in 6 months. I can't find the injectable vaccine anyhow, even the health department only has the mist. Glad you found it though! He doesn't have a fever but is spilling right now and sounds like your daughter wasn't spilling if she was trace. I need to ask the neph again tomorrow, and continue to hunt for the vaccine.
Thanks for replying.

my sons neph dr said that my son is not allowed to get any flu shot or swine flu shot because he is on steriods and prograf and that he could relapse from the shots. so my son is 8 and he is being home schooled till probably the end of January depending on how he is doing cause he has be replasing since may of t his year and we are finally getting everything better but afraid to take the chances of sending him to school or getting flu shots

this is what my fear is.. I'm not sending my son back right now because he is relasping and because of the high germ factor at school. however I do have two girls going to school, so they could bring anything home and have. I was told to get the H1N1 shot no matter if he is relapsing or not, so I need to confirm this.

My daughter has been in remission for 13 weeks now. Just last Monday she tested positive for H1N1. I thought it was the end of the world and I thought for sure it would bring on a relapse but thank god it didn't and this flu was NOT as bad as I thought it would be. She was treated right away with a anti-biotic Relenza and this helped her feel better so much faster. there is not a H1N1 shot to be had here. My Neph told me to still get her the vaccine when it comes available.

Our son had just had a relapse and happen to be on maximum dose of prednisone, and I think day 3 at negative. He is also on Cellcept and he started prograf today. He got the vaccine, as did the rest of our family on Saturday. We were recommended by our nephrologist here in Toronto, as well as 2 other Nephrologists in the states. Toronto does not have regular flu shot yet. Hope this helps. I know these decisions are so difficult. I truly wish none of us had to make these choices.
Best of luck,
Syma

We are going to all get the shot when I can find it. It is not available in our Chicago area yet in the form we need it(injectable). My bigger fear is just getting back into remission as we are on the max dose of Prograf we can be on. Hopefully it will happen without additional immune suppresants. I was hoping Prograf was my miracle drug, it appears none are!!!!!

WE got it no problems! Get it! It is important!

Or son was +4 and with in 3 days +1. The Whole family got the H1N1 shot last thursday with him being +1. Things are still good, thank GOD!!!!!
Good Luck!

Is your son on Prograf? Did he turn that around on his own? My son looks like he is pulling out of this and as soon as the shot is availalbe we'll get it...
Good for you, it was in your area!!!

WorriedmomV, how long has your son been on prograf?

6-7 months. He has had NS since 2. He is 8. He relaspes 2-3 times per year. He was on cellcept for three years, then no immune suppresants, now prograf 3mg per day and low prednisone, like 5 mg every other day for maintenance. I have read lots of kids on prograf get colds, and virus's and don't relapse, so I'm a little diasppointed. However, he spilled for about 6 days now and appears to be coming out of it. I like not going on huge prednisone doses,(for him that's about 60- mg a day) he gains about 6-7 lbs being on the steroids for months and weaning again, and then the moon face, yuck!!

As of this year we started Virtual School with our son with NS. Our other child goes to Public School. I grew exausted fighting school districts, teachers and doctors. It is the best thing we have done! H1N1 did come into our home via public school and placed everyone on Tamiflu. Our NS son is on 60 mg Pred. and the Tamiflu kicked his symptoms FAST!
We will not get the vaccine due to his body doesn't develop antibodies for whatever reason...

You should know that vaccines are for the most part 79% chance to provide some immunity and when on immunosupressants it goes much lower. Also, the funds set up through the Federal Governments Vaccine Compensation Program, set up so one can file in the court for damages caused by Vaccines adverse events. Well, your Congress has said NO you can not file with H1N1 and it is Mandated.
Just some info. one should be aware of.

tell me more about virtual school...how did you get the school to back you? I'm exhausted too, talking the nurse all the time, explaining, explaining, keeping him home....
He's on tamiflu righht now b/c he got a bug at school again!!!! 101F temperature and the Ped. and neph. don't want to take chances in case it's flu...

We had our son vaccinated against the H1N1 last week, and he is doing great. The only complaint he had was a sore arm for about a day. My son has Nephrotic Syndrome and is a frequent relapser. He is currently in remission, 4 months now, thanks to the recent Cytoxan treatment we tried. It was a very tough decision on whether to get the vaccine or not, especially when our Neph told us that getting the shot could potentially cause a relapse. But he felt it was better to risk a potential relapse than to risk getting H1N1. It certainly is a very hard decision for each family to make, I will be thinking of you and your family. Hope your son gets better soon.
