My daughter may need dialysis. How long is the night portion of peritoneal dialysis if you use a night exchanger? Any thoughts on whether the night machine exchange is better than the exchange every 6 hours? Trying to decide on type of home dialysis and haven't ruled out hemodialysis yet. The trouble is trying to imagine fitting hemodialysis into her life as she wants to go away to college. Your thoughts would be appreciated.
Wow, thats a tough one. If it werent for the going away to college i would have highly recommended the overnight hemo dialysis as that is what i do now. I am 29 and i tried peritoneal about 6 years ago. I found it very uncomfortable. There was a constant feeling of fullness and a bloated belly. Her options are limited though, because for home hemo you are required to have a partner and especially for the overnight treatments, just as a helping hand and a safeguard. I have tried all types of dialysis and after doing the overnight treatment (i run 3-4 per week on the days that i choose) i have bloodwork coming back the best i can remember and i feel the best i have in a long time. Your reply was very helpful. I have heard of doing home dialysis 6 nights a week for 2-3 hours. Do you have some kidney function? How long do you do dialysis each night at home? Do you use a fistula and the button hole technique? So many questions.... I am so glad that things are going so well for you.
