Question with creatinine levels

0 Recommendations

I've had FSGS for 10 years now and have never not spilt protein. I've been on prograf for 3 years now at 2mg 2x daily. My creatinine has consistanty been under 1.

I had a Dr appointment on tuesday and he wasn't happy with my bloodwork. He said that even though the prograf level in my blood was barely detectable, my BUN was elevated and my creatinine was elevated to 1. 65. He seemed concerned that this could be an indication to the beginning of slight kidney failure.

He raised my dosage of prograf to 4mg 2x a day along with 10 mg of prednisone to see if it will stop the progress. I guess my question is should a creatinine level of 1.65 be alarming after 10 years of it being .6-.9?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Detrol Lipitor Cyclosporine Pain Prednisone Detrol LA

I am not a doctor, but Creatinine Serum level should be between .76 - 1.27.

Bun/Creatinine Ration is from 8 - 27

I have been told that a move from 1 to 1.7 had a much more significant impact than a 4 to 4.7 movement. That being said about a month ago my level was 1.4 and last week it went back to 1. Are you on any statin drugs for cholesterol control? My Cyclosporine caused an intensity with my Lipitor and muscle pain. Once I reduced my Lipitor dosage, the pain went away. The doctors think this may have been what caused the increase in creatinine. Hope this helps?

My disease background is really similar to yours. I've seen my creatinine levels bounce around from 0.9 to 1.75 back down to 1.3 within the course of a year, after holding steady around 1 for several years. Paradoxically, my protein spillage is now the lowest it's been in years.

Anyway, I don't think it's worth freaking out about one elevated reading, but definitely a good idea to keep an eye on it.

Chrissy-

Here is the way your situation was explained to me...

The nephrologists said it is much worse if your creat. goes from normal to even 1.2-3, than if you go from 2.0 to 3.8...reason being, is that it is all relative to kidney function...they assume no kidney damage/ function problems when it is normal, so when you suddenly elevate above normal, it causes much more alarm than say, someone who has had eleveated levels for a while.....they already know the kidney is damaged and not functioning properly. Hope that makes some sense...even though, I know it is still confusing.....

My nephs are thrilled when my creat. is at 1.6, considering I am usually at the 2.0 range...which is the difference between stage 3 & 4, so I am thrillled when it is there too! They always told me that if your protein goes down, so will your creatinine....well, that is not always true. I had ONE normal protein level, but my creat. didn't change at all and I was soo confused. They explained that the protein spill over the years had already scarred my kidneys, so the damage is already done. My creat. level only goes between 1.6-7 to 2.3...they say it probably will never be normal again, because the damage is done. BTW, my creat. is never consistent really and I am not on any pred. or immuno drugs either. There really is no rhyme or reason as to why it does this.

Do you drink much water? Your BUN and creat. will be more elevated if you are dehydrated...just a thought. Also, have you started any new meds lately? Even OTC drugs can have effects. My mother began taking Detrol LA for urination urgency control, and although there was nothing listed anywhere about it in the side efects/ precautions, her creat. went from .7 to 1.6 within 2 weeks. As soon as she stopped taking it, it went back to normal.
