possible sympton from the meds

Hello,

I joined the community approx. a week ago. The every changing world of FSGS is a hard one to learn. When I think I understand, I find something that says you have more to learn...

My daughter, 16 was diagnosed with FSGS just a few months ago....I noticed some swelling in her lower legs and I mistakenly told her that she needs to lay off the chips and drink more water....that advice didn't help, and I really believed that she was not following the advice correctly. So I took her to the dr because she felt I didn't know what I was talking about. I thought it would be a 15 min. visit for the dr. to tell her that "mom knows best"....instead it was a 1.5 hour visit, with lots of questions, and the dr. leaving and making calls, coming back with more questions....in the end, we had to go to the hospital for lab work, and she had to start a 24 urine collection.

The next week, we were in a nephrologist office, I had never heard of a nephrologist. Now this was the second dr. who (in less than a week) told my daughter, don't listen to your mother's advice. We were so close to the holidays, that the dr. suggested that we wait for the New Year and then pull her into the hospital for a biopsy. That was done and before you know it we were off to UNC to see a pediatric nephrologist. She was diagnosed with FSGS, collapsing. She was put on HCTZ (for the edema), liprosil (???), 60mg prednisone, baby aspirin, and a multi-vitamin.....She has been complaining of muscle cramps in her hands and feet. Is this a sympton of prednisone? or one of the others?

She has not been in remission as of yet...but I am praying for the day. She has been on the predisone for 6 weeks now, she is being weaned off, so that she can start the next phase of treatment. She has the worse kind of FSGS, and according to my nephrologist, we have to work hard to get her into remission as soon as possible. The treatment above has helped her to go from 12G of protein down to 5G....so we are making progress...just not enough, to begin to relax.

Everything is such an event around here lately...her learning to swallow pills, because until now she only took baby liquid meds if necessary...she has been a very healthy child otherwise, no allergies, I don't know that she even had an ear infection growing up. So again, this was a big surprise.

Thanks for allowing me to vent....

And again, the question is are muscle cramps a symptom of prednisone use?

i did not read your whole letter but began this response as soon as i saw that your daughter was complaining of muscle cramps! this could be more serious then you think. i am 15(16 on the 13th of march) and have FSGS too. so i know wut your daughter is going thro. the muscle cramps are becuase you LOW POTASSIOM and CALCIUM. most of the medicine we take to keep the fluid of also seems to get rid of alot of potassuim and calcium. you may not now but both of these help your muscles to work correctly. also if anybodies potassium goes to low you could die.. or ifit goes to high you could die... so as you can see it is very important to regulate it. My hand cramps are very painfula nd its like a 'charlie horse' but 10x worse and you can't just stretch out and they go away. i odn't no how bad it is for your daughter but i no mine are very bad. and once teh potassium level goes back up i dont get hand cramps. i take potasisium capsules( u can get them in big horse pills that dissolve in water... i would suggest the capsules) i take 1 in the mournign and 2 at night. u should talk to you doctor about this immediatly. i hope he give your the medication because IV potassium stings... not a big fan.

much love and support
emily

PS. i was diagnosed in summer of '06 with MCD and then summer of 07' diagnosed with FSGS i'm not sure if its collapsing but it might be. i was the kind of kid who got the flu maybe every 2 or 3 YEARS! and then all of sudden i started getting "allergies" that were actually puffy eyes from fluid... and then one day i had Elephant legs! and they were all swollen and my mom laughed and said WELL did you eat alot of salt today.. and i made a list of everything i ate in the last 24 hours and she knew it was somethin else(shes a RN). and before long i was in a University too awaiting my biobsy. i have been on 4 treatment plans and they have all failed to work fully and i am not in remission but i still think i will in the future.. and if not hopeflly i will be very stable and be able to keep only about 10-15 lbs of fluid instead 30-40. arg. well hopefully this has been some hekp if you have ne more question please ask

Thanks Emily for the response.

My daughter woke up last night complaining abut the pain...she had mentioned it earlier in the week...but I think she forgot to tell the dr. when we saw her on Tue. I told her that I thought it might be calcium related...this is the one thing in her diet that I have not been able to get her to conform too...not everything else is perfect, but I know she is lacking in diet in the calcium arena...

I will call into her dr. for advice.

Thanks again.

My daughter is 3 years old and she has cramps often. Our doctor suggested she eat a tums or two each day for calcium. She suggested this because it's more like candy. So far my daughter will eat them.

Hi
My son Rowan(6) used to get muscle cramps and they were usually low potassium (to much frusimide) or low sodium often I gave him a few salty chippies and the cramps would go away so no I dont think its a side effect of prednisone
