Hi, has anyone else had diarrhea if drinking diluted orange or orange juice whilst on cyclosporin and pred ?
Just trying to rule out orange out of layla's diet as she has had orange to drink twice in the last 2 months and each time same effect had.

Hi - we are on both pred and cyclosporin and have not had any probs with orange juice and she has it daily with her meds. Hope this helps. Trace

Theres a great website that you can look up interactions with medications and it even goes over the interactions with foods. It doesnt say anything about OJ specifically but it does recommend against grapefruit juice with cyclosporin.
the website its www.drugs.com. And you use the interactions checker.
We use it for all his prescription meds and even the vitamins and over the counter stuff. Better safe than sorry. We know that grapefruit juice also does do well with Cellcept. Changes the bodies absorption rates.

Not sure if it helps or not.

Thaks for your replies, i will have a look at that site.

My husband was on the pred only but he drank OJ almost everyday with no problems. However myself I can not drink even a little bit and will have the same problems you are talking about...and I am on no medication. She may just not be able to tolerate the juice and not even anything to do with the meds. I was told a long time ago that it could be because of the PH level in my body why I could not drink it. I have no idea if that is true or not. maybe try fresh squeesed that might work I can even drink that at times. Good luck

I think maybe your right because it says on the bottle give with orange juice !
I think i will stay away from it anyway. Thanks

Just one other thing - my daughter takes the tablets but they were going to give her the cyc. liquid and they did say at the time that whatever she starts taking it with she always has to have it with the same drink - eg. always oj or always milk etc you can't change it about. You might want to look into this too before changing your mix. Trace

The liquid is vile, i taste all of laylas meds and i have gotta say that this is by far the worst !! But luckily layla takes her meds without any fuss.
Thanks

They told us that at the hospital so Morgan decided she was big enough for tablets thank goodness - she also takes prednisolone tablets which she is happy about because the liquid form is also discusting but not as bad as the cyc. Have a great day - off to drop kids at school and kindergarten. Trace

I am an adult with FSGS and I am not allowed to drink OJ or eat oranges due to the high potassium content. Also cannot drink cow or goat milk due to the high phosphorus content. Have you talked with your neph about this? My neph is very strict about diet and from information gained at a a recent Nephcure sponsored seminar, the research doctors there seems to promote diet as well.

I agree with Leigho. It may have nothing to do with the meds --OJ is really pretty acidic so it can be rough for anyone with any sort of sensitive digestion. My doctor has told me orange juice and coffee are two very common trigger items to avoid if you have a sensitive stomach.

Potassium/phosphorus are really only an issue if your blood levels are getting out of the normal range, but it's definitely worth checking with your doctor about.

I agree with Boussar...be absolutely sure that OJ/milk is ok because I know I certainly can't drink either because of high potassium/phosphorus levels in those foods.

It might be a good idea to not even go anywhere near grapefruits/juice. That's probably the one food that is most problematic for anyone on any kind of prescription med.

Diet is so important in controlling the effects of FSGS, and you can't forget about drinks.

I agree with you all, had her bloods back yesterday and everything is fine, so i guess she is just sensitive to OJ. We are seeing our consultant(neph) on monday and i will talk about it.

The cyclo interacts with grapefruit juice and can cause the levels to go up. Even Suuny Delight has grapefruit in it. We mix our daughter's cyclo with milk and choc syrup. Put in a shot glass and let her have at it. She thinks its fun..
Good luck,
a

Maybe my neph is just cautious but my blood work is always in normal range for potassium and phosphorus but he still wants me to maintain the low potassium and low phosphorus diet. He believes that anything that is hard on the kidneys should be avoided.
