NS and sports?

Do any of you have your angels in sports right now? My son sees his big sister playing soccer and wants to know when he can play. I don't want him to get sick doing so. Any advice?

My 16 Year old daughter has fsgs and membranous nephritis. She was diagnosed a little over a year ago. I chose no sports through this past spring as she was on an aggressive high dose 6 months of steroids. She didnt feel all that great at the time. The disease process was still very new and I took a proceed with caution until I had a better idea what her blood pressure would do off the steroids. She has since returned to sports and for the most part does ok. Distance running got to her this past weekend at a practice, but she does know her limitations and when she needs to take a breather. The activity is good for her and she loves it. Being a part of a team is important for her too, as she feels very different in so many other ways due to this disease. If your doctor is ok with it, I say go for it! Use your best judgement if it seems too much for him or if other children are not well that are playing. Purell is a Godsend for us!

Chris has been on/off pred for 4 years and on Cellcept for over 3 years. We never stopped him from activities, but he wasnt much of a sports kid. However last year in 8th grade PE class some of the side effects reared up. Long story short, high dose steroids caused bone weakening, he had multiple fractures in his lower legs all at the same time. Just from PE class. Bone density loss at only 14.
His Dr's put him on Vitamin D and Calcium and he had marked improvement. We will see what happens with the next DEXA scan.
my 'opinion' is let the kid be a kid. feeling 'normal' and positive is one of the best treatments the kids can get. But keep up on the side effects. Check with your Neph or Ped Dr. and see what they suggest.

Kenzie has always played sports. She played softball all spring and summer and Basketball after that. Her last basketball game is tomorrow and she never missed a practice or a game until this week for she is down with H1N1. She has done really well in sports.

Shermil how is she doing with the H1N1 it is in my daughters school. Just a bit nervous she will bring it home to my son who has not gotten the shot yet!

I am an adult, but I run 4 times a week and lift wieghts 3 times a week. If anything I think physical activity can only help.

Make sure he takes some vitiams, and have fun!!

Wieght training increases bone density.

BABYWITHFSGS,

She started with it on Monday and she was awful this day. She couldn't even lift her head. We took her into our PCP and he swabbed her and started her on an anti-biotic called Relenza right away even before we got results. The results came back positive the very next day. Yesterday which was the second day she was running a temp. at 5:30 in the morning and she never ran another temp. again after giving her Tylenol so honestly it hasn't been that bad. I am not sending her back to school at all this week. Kenzie did not get the shot yet either becasue there is none to be had here where I live but her Neph told me to still get her the shot when it becomes availiable. So this flu was not as bad as I expected it would be. It still scared though when I found out she had it.

Given the question of sports or physical activities can anyone shed some light on the effect of steroids on the bones/muscles etc and which question should I be asking the doctors?

What sort of medicine if any are available to help in the growth/strenghing of the bones?

I got a 5-1/2 year old with NS, I have never stopped him from any sport but am worried of any possible injuries due to NS and would like to advise his school teachers accordingly.

Any help is weclome.

I have a son, 12 years old, who has hopefully outgrown his NS (at around 8 years old) but he played soccer non stop and didn't seem to have any trouble with sports.
I also have a 5 year old daughter who has NS and she is currently playing soccer as well. While the steroids have increased her weight considerably, she still loves getting out there and running. I think that the exercise is good for her. It would be interesting to find out more about the bone and growth factors.

Shermil!
Thank you soo much it makes me feel much better! A few of the children in my daughters school that got the flu had fevers over!!! 104

My son has IGA Nephropathy, After playing football the other day he became ill with visible blood in his urine, sore throat and generally feeling low, we know that certain foods bring on his condition (allergies) but have never made a connection with sports. I did some research and it does seem there may be a connection,

I think sports are a great way to keep the pred weight off! Provided the child is healthy enough to participate. Right now, during high flu season, we keep our son out of the "indoor midget style" soccer, but sports out in the open air like baseball (nobody touches each other in that sport), soccer, golf and tennis are fine. I actually think it helps them mentally as well - it's fun and they get to interact with other kids. Slade

Our son Chris has gotten into bowling. He does it 3 times a week. And loves it! Keeps him out of the foul weather and he lives with a sanitizer bottle handy and he just uses it between turns.
