No/Low Sodium Foods--Post them here!

1 Recommendation

Another person's post about food inspired me to start this one. Please post any great foods that you have found or ideas you have had to spice foods up! Here are some of ours:

No sodium peanut butter (add honey to it to give it flavor, honey has no sodium)

Hansen's carbonated beverages--no sodium

Kashi Cinnamon Harvest Cereal-tastes like
Cinnamon life and has no sodium.

No sodium baking soda was a huge find for us. We had to go to a specialty health food store to find it....but now we make bread, cookies, tortillas, pizza dough, everything we couldn't make before.

Starburst candy--no sodium!

Soy milk-less sodium than cow's milk. (Not so great to drink, but great for cereal, baking, etc.,)

Unsalted butter

No sodium ketchup--Del Monte and Heinz--use this to make homemade no sodium barbecue sauce!

Mozzerella cheese seems to have the least sodium of all the cheeses.

i thought low sodium rice a roni still had alot of sodium in it?

frozen broccoli and brussel sprouts, if you like your green veggies. Luckily, we do!

This was a great topic to post...thank you!!!

My son loves tacos and tortilla chips. After searching high and low we found a few winners that work for Brandon.

'Naturally Preferred' Tortilla Chips are great! We get them from the natural food section of our grocery store. They come in three flavors yellow, white or blue corn and only have 65 mg for about 14 chips. He loves to dip them in the salt free ketchup. Sounds pretty nasty doesn't it? I agree, but he loves it and that's all that matters to me!

The other is taco shells. Our store brand 'Albertsons' has zero sodium white taco shells as does, Fred Meyer. Old El Paso makes taco shells that have 135 mg in 3 shells. We use 1/2 of a 30% lower sodium taco seasoning packet (McCormick brand) mixed into a pound of ground beef and with a little shredded cheese... it's under 100 mg. per taco.

Isn't nice to be able to say YES, have some more... instead of no you can't eat that! Keep the ideas coming!

My son loves Mexican food....we make a lot of burritos and tacos at home, but when we do go out, we go to Rubio's or Chipotle and he gets a burrito bowl. It is amazing how much sodium there is in the restaurant tortillas! Almost all restaurants have their nutrition facts online, so we have learned what foods he can have when we go out. Some foods, like Chinese food, we just can't do.

For pizza he can have pizza, but no pepperoni, ham, sausage...he loves cheese pizza with mushrooms. But we usually only go there on "high" days (meaning days that he has worked out and can have 800 more miligrams than normal)

i make my own taco seasoning with cumin, chili powder, and a dash of cayenne pepper. If i ever need salt, i just use one grind of the sea salt grinder. It has ALOT less sodium then table salt. You know what really annoys me, when people douse their food in table salt without even tasting it!!!

When we first learned our son had NS he was limited to 1,000mg a day and this website was my best friend.
http://www.lowsodiumcooking.com/ He would go through it himself and find recipes and now that he is a bit older he loves to cook stuff on his own as well.
You dont have to join or anything, you can see the recipe archives anyway.
One of the best things I found though was HerbOx makes low sodium and no sodium beef and chicken bullion. its a great flavor add in for a lot of recipes I make.

Oops, and one add on... Having a friend in the fast food industry... if your kids just really want the fast food... many places if you do the walk in thing, will be happy to help you out. Like at McDonalds you can have the burgers done without the grill seasoning, drops about 2oo mg off, and you can always order the fries unsalted. and we would have the pickles left off and he'd put his ketchup on it when we got home. If it was a road trip, his ketchup always went in the snack cooler. Lots of places will do that.

Hi Chris and Mom,

How old is your son? Has he had NS for a long time?

What a great tip! I have a low sodium cookbook, but this will just add to what we have already exhausted!

We travel with no-salt ketchup as well...always in the snack cooler. Our son loves hamburgers and fries...what teenager doesn't? So when we make a fast food stop, we just order it plain for him...thank God for salt-free ketchup!

I can't believe how many families out there are dealing with the same things we are. I'm so thankful to have stumbled upon NephCure. What a blessing to bring all these families together so we can share and learn from one another!

I have found a lot of great low sodium/no sodium foods at Trader Joes and Whole Foods

Trader Joes has no salt tortilla chips, no salt pasta sauce, no salt salsa, and they carry a potatoe chip that has only 95 mg of sodium per 12 chips.

Whole foods carries no salt turkey in the deli you can use on sandwiches, they even have no salt microwave popcorn.

I have found a swiss cheese at Whole Foods that is only 35 mg of sodium per slice and whole foods carries chicken nuggets for kids that are only 220 mg of sodium for 6 nuggets.

Since my son is only 2 1/2 I try to buy foods that he can eat like the rest of the kids and not feel deprived or different.

I also have to add I changed my whole family to a low sodium diet and my husband and mines cholesteral went down and we both lost a few pounds... so it is a benefit for all and even after my son gets better I plan on sticking to a low sodium diet for my whole family....

For any West Coast people...if you go to In-N-Out Burger you can order something that is not on the menu...it is called a "Flying Dutchman." It is a Double burger without a bun. You can order it with no salt, and can order no salt fries as well. We try to avoid any fast food because of the fat and cholesterol, but In-N-Out Burger is the "healthiest" fast food alternative around.

We make our own hamburger buns and carry no sodium ketchup with us....and Jeremy has a complete burger! Sometimes he even just eats the patties plaint with cheese only and he loves it.

Speaking of Trader Joe's...they have the only low sodium salsa I have found. I believe it is called Tomato Fire Roasted Salsa...and it's really good. About 30 mg in 2 TBSP's.

AWESOME!!

GO CHECK OUT LIVINGLOWSODIUM.COM THEY HAVE A FEW THINGS WITH LOW SODIUM & NO SODIUM. I HAVE TRIED A LOT OF IT & SO FAR IT HAS ALL BEEN GOOD

A simple home made low sodium salsa my son came up with is No salt added diced canned tomatoes, onions, cilantro and the Extra spicey Mrs. Dash. Its about 50 mg Sodium in 1/2 cup. He doesnt like to dice the fresh tomatoes and he likes the wetter salsa he gets from the canned. Both Del Monte and walmarts house "great Value" brand have various no salt added canned veggies and tomato products. they help when you need things faster than garden fresh.
He's come up with his own pizza sauce the same way. He is all about the playing with the Mrs Dash. And they make marinades now as well. and our son is 13 and has been doing the cooking experiementing for 3 years now. Has talked about writing a cookbook for kids.. bless his heart.
Also I remembered aother handy site for looking up things that dont always have labels.. and most that do.
www.calorieking.com you can look up just about anything, including canned goods and even restaurants and see total nutrition labels.
This has been one of the better threads I have seen for dealing with the daily dietary grind. Thank you.

We live in an area where the stores are just now beginning to carry some of the no salt veggies, tomato sauce, ketchup, etc. We have found a couple of places online to order no salt or lower sodium foods. My husband loves dill pickles and of course that is a huge no-no. We found a place that has them and he loves them. His nutritionist looked at them to make sure they weren't loaded on potassium because you have to be careful of that too, but they were good!

Anyway, www.HealthyHeartMarket.com is one and www.heartwisefood.com is another. Hope this helps some of you that live out in the boonies like we do!

I too will add a bit of sea salt if I am really craving it, just a small amount is not that bad.

Trader Joe's is awesome, I am now addicted to their low sodium tomato soup it is only 70mg per serving (1 cup) and it tastes really good, I will add some swiss cheese to it to make it like a french onion soup style. The swiss is really low in sodium and I have found roast beef between 70mg-105 mg of sodium per serving (2 slices). Onion rolls are 170mg of sodium. For lunch I have a swiss, roast beef, onion roll sandwich.

Cereal and pasta's are low sodium and I found a low sodium marinara sauce. You can also use olive oil/lemon/wine for a sauce.

I also like edy's frozen popsicle's they are tasty too!

I loooove salt!

If you all love popcorn you gotta try......

Kernel Season's Popcorn Seasonings,

It comes in no sodium flavors like Kettle Corn, Caramel, Chocolate Marshmallow and low sodium BBQ flavor. There are lots more flavors, that's just a few I've ordered and loved.

a warning:

i will just have to say that we all should be careful of peanut butter, chocolate, fish, eggs, and candies with high fructose corn syrup. our daughter cannot eat any of these foods, and her protein will go up if she does. especially with chocolate. your children might be the same. so please be careful, and watch what happens to you or your children after they eat these foods by testing with the albustix to see if there are positive results. i say this because negative is a good thing here.

to chris and mom I hope he dose come up with that cookbook for kids as my son loves to cook also and i have to watch how much salt he uses when he cooks because of my husband

Chili

1-2lbs ground beef
1 large Onion
2 ribs of celery
1 green pepper
2 cans of organic kidney beans. (whole foods has a brand that only have 100mg for 1/2 cup of beans
2 cans no salt added diced tomatoes.
1tbsp chili powder
1tbsp cumin
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Brown ground beef and sautee onion and celery
Add the rest of the ingredients and let simmer for 30 mins. Whole foods has a vegetarian chili powder mix that is low in sodium. I use just a pinch of that. It's made with sea salt which is naturally lower in sodium.

I freeze the chili in single serving container and just defrost one in the microwave when I need one. It's delicious and my whole family enjoys it
