Muscle spasams and cramp HELP!!!

0 Recommendations

Lately I have been having the worst muscle spasams and cramps. Sometimes they alternate from leg to leg every two hours. Its gets very bad to the point where I am screaming or crying for relief. I have been using a heating pad which seems to bring me some relief. Does anyone else have this issue or does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Hey,
My daughter been having the same problem for 2 years now, I have been told by the doc that it is the calcium that is doing it, Giorgias fingers and toes get really bad cramps. i use a heat pad or warm water or rub them till they are ok,I also heard from another doc that the cause of it is by the tapering of steroids?

I've been drinking tonic water with quinne when I get crampy. It's something a Dr had mentioned to me years ago and it definitly works. I buy the 6-8oz individual glass bottles and drink it as soon as I get the cramps. For me, the cramps usually come on when I've taken diuretics. Hope this helps!

Do you take Lasix? Or Lipitor?
It could also be that your potassium is depleted. Eat some tomatoes or potatoes see if it helps.

i take lasix

Good morning Tyree. Lasix is a potassium depleting diuretic. Have you had a potassium level done?

I also had cramping in my calves and my hands. I was on lasix and crestor at the time. My neph and internist thought it could be either the lasix or the crestor. I stopped taking both and lo and behold the cramping disappeared. Only problem is that I don't know for sure if it was the crestor or lasix that caused the cramping. I am still off the lasix and am now taking zocor. Still no cramping.

If your potassium shows low eat a banana every day!

Like we all said....lol...potassium. My potassium is high so when my toes cramped up and would not uncramp...yes not uncramp hurt sooo bad....I had to soak them in HOT water. Then I ate potatoes with tomatoes! Now I make sure I keep up on it.

I have bad leg cramps & in my right quad, of my stomach. The ones in my stomach are happening alot, like when I laugh, or bend over to get something. I have been using bio freeze. Last year when this started I had to up my calcium to 4 a day. I was thinking I may need to up it again because I don't eat dairy at all.

Hi,
I found that when these cramps start a glass of OJ usually helps on top of stretching them out.

This is a direct result from the diuretics/lasix. I know exactly what you are talking about. Mine would always happen while I was sleeping and they were hurt so bad I would almost scream and cry. The pain was so bad that it hurt even after it was done until the next day. The key here is to make sure you are hydrated. Drink plenty of liquids. Since you are urinating frequently, you should eat a banana (highest potassium). If you do not like bananas, I would suggest some types of yogurt (read label for potassium), or orange juice. I hate bananas with a passion but I used to eat them just so I wouldnt be in pain. Do not get any over the counter potassium without a drs approval

the tonic water is bitter but it's worth it.. Rather then waking up screaming in the middle of the night :)

Believe it apple cider vinegar takes the cramps away. 2 tablespoons, 3x a day. I am so used to drinking it now I can drink it straight out the bottle. I used to cry something awful because of the severe leg cramps. The pain would be so bad my legs would be moving on there own fom the spasms. Try it , believe me it works!

My ARNP suggested the tonic water, but she told me that it tastes awful and to mix it with juice to make it palatable.

I have had cramps in my legs so bad that it still hurts up to 4 days later. I also have had the cramps in my hands, arms and once in my neck. Thank yous for the tips I will be sure to try it.

I go to physicially therapy, they apply heat on my back with a massage, my insurance pays everything but $5.00, and I am good for awhile, but I haven't been there for 2 weeks, and pain came back, and am going tomorrow...

love, heppy

Tyree, I can relate. Before my kidney function was restored I carried my heating pad every where I went.
The cramps were so painful and I had them all the time. I was afraid to more. After I began treatment and my kidney function was restored, the cramps went away and have not come back. That was 2 years ago. It seems everyone is relating the cramps to the drugs but I was on high doses of cellcept and prednisone without cramps. I was also on several other prescriptions that helped with various side effects. I left the hospital with 14 prescriptions including 2 types of insulin to offset the sugar problems caused by the prednisone and cellcept.
Hope your cramps go away too. They are really horrible.
