Knee Pain

0 Recommendations

Anyone experiencing knee pain? I don't know if it's related to FSGS, the medicine, or if my 47 year old body is just getting old. I have gained about 30 pounds since I got sick, but I get up from a chair like my mother, who's had knee replacement! I would think arthritis would have been more gradual, this seems to have happened more suddenly.

Linda, I experience alot of pain. My knees have been hurting since april. Especially my left. I thought it was age (48). But I don't think so. My knee hurts even when i lie down! I don't know what stage you are? I am 4. My persona belief is that it is from kidney disease because we are not able to keep all of the nutrients in our bodies in order to fuel them. I will mention it to my doc when i go but just like everything else i never seem to get the answer i am looking for.

Eat some potassium and calcium rich foods then ice it, heat it, rest it and ice it.
NO ADVIL OR IBUPROPHEN!! Tylenol!
I just went through the sore knee and sore hip...doctor took x-rays of both and found - "you are borderline osteoporosis." Hmmm, could it be the fricking evil Prednisone? Yes, it can.
We do not have a lot to help our bones and muscles fight anymore so all the bad things are coming. Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Neuropathy, rashes, red spots, unknown bruising and if prone to it Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Get the x-ray and see if it could be anything. If not then they will tell you the same - ice it, rest it and heat it if necessary.

Yep, sounds like one of prednisone's evil curses! Have your doc prescribe some meds to help fight against the damage done to bones and joints from the prednisone.

Thanks everyone! I had a bone density last year, after I broke both my feet at the same time, and I do take fosamax and vitamin D, that's when he finally took me off the prednisone!! I used to roll my eyes when customers would come into our stores and start listing the aches and pains and surgeries etc. I HAVE BECOME ONE!!! I guess God is teaching me empathy.
Anyone walking regularly? I want to get the energy to start!

MamaG: You said everything i wanted to say. You are correct. Our bodies are being robbed. I can't do the Potassium because my body isn't getting rid of that and is causing irregular heart beats etc... So, anyone with advanced stages of kidney disease needs to be careful of that one.

Linda: I don't know what kind of shape you are in but walking helps everything. I don't do it right now other than walking my cute little puggle. A doctor just told my husband and myself to start walking just 5 min. a day for a week. then 10 for a week, then 15 and so on until you get to 30. He is a cardiologist and said this is the best way for a person to perform a habit, and no pain is involved so you will want to continue to do it. We just have to start doing it!!

Yes Linda I have knee pain and my feet hurt also. I have gained 50 pounds since beginning to take the "Evil" Prednisone. I long for the day that I can quit taking it.... Good Luck and just remember you are not alone......

The pain can also be from excess fluid on the joints! And the extra weight puts more pressure on the joints as well. I've noticed my knees hurt less as I've been losing weight (and I walked 45 min a day regularly until i injured my foot 5 weeks ago that doesn't want to heal). Getting rid of edema may help as well as ice. Any time I have any kind of joint pain doctors tell me "rest, ice, elevation". Good luck and hope your knee is feeling better soon! Joint pain is no fun regardless of the cause!

I have been having knee pain for about 6 months now and found out mine is due loss of muscle in my thighs... because of that the knee cap does not slide correclty on the track causing pain when I try to squat, sit, or stand up. It is a vicious cycle that because I am sick I can't really exercise so my body starts to hurt which makes it hurt to exercise. After sheeding the 20 something pounds that prednison put on me I am now feeling more energized and have just decided to power thorugh and start an exercise regimen and work on building that strength back

Have I said lately how much I HATE PREDNISONE???
Yeesh.

One possibility is a side effect from Cholesterol meds if you are on them. I was getting joint pain in my knees and my internist switched me from Lipitor to Crestor. The soreness went away. You might want to check into this.
good luck.

hey they are all correct, I however take some calcium supliments one in the morn and one at night. Due to the protien loss through out the day, all my nutrients go in the toilet. I also take vit. D daily seperately because the vit D weakens the affect of the calcium if taken together.

Try to execise those knees If not they tend to get stiff.
floor stretching and walking are great.

P.S thanks for your comment on the cyclosporine, I would go insane without my neph family.
We are all in this together.

Eva, I know how you feel about this community, it's great to talk to people who know exactly what you are going through. I know I need to take calcium, but it makes me nauseous, I guess I need to figure this out.
thanks everyone!!!
Linda

I experience knee pain, as well as aches all over my body. My neph basically looks at me like I am crazy, and just blows me off.......... one more reason to get a new one! I am off the prednisone, and am slowly losing weight, but I am relapsing so I have a ton of fluid now...... never ending!

Man do I have knee pain. The prednisone wipes me out and the Imuran makes up for what the pred doesn't do. I have knee pain and my knees are so weak that I can hardly make it up the stairs to my house. I have lost a lot of muscle mass. I used to do total patient care and now it can't muster enough strength to fix supper without taking lots of breaks. I got these weird red spots all over my body that just show up for no reason. My neph said that it is side effects of the Imuran. They are currently weaning me off of the pred and Imuran. I have another two weeks to go and I will be off the pred and then they will take me off of the Imuran. They are going to put me on cytoxin next. Is it going to be worse? This is all new to me.

I have severe osteoporosis caused by the prednisone and all of my joints in my hands, knees, hips hurt so bad I can hardly function. I've been completely off prednisone for over a month now and have also become so nauseous I can hardly eat. I went back to the nephrologist yesterday and he thinks it is because the prednisone was keeping the inflammation in the joints down, so he has put me back on 5 mg every other day to see if that takes care of the joint pain and nausea. I didn't want to go back on it at all, but the pain and nausea is so debilitating I can't do anything. I heard on the news last night that drugs like Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, etc. are now thought to be causing bone loss! Great...since I am on Protonix and Prevacid to combat the acid reflux also caused by the prednisone! Anybody else heard that? I'm on Forteo shots now, so hope that will combat it to some extent. Sometimes it just seems that everything works against FSGS!

it's not the disease that we have to worry about! It's everything else!!!

PREDNISONE!!!!!! .... When I was one prednisone my knees hurt so much no matter what. I could either be standing or sitting and it made no difference. I once was in so much pain that I almost fell over while walking in Penn Station. I gained like 20 pounds, my face got round, i started getting mood swings, got a little hump on my back and worst of all the knee pains. I hope I never have to take it again!!

While taking prednisone make sure you take three doses of 1000mg calcium daily, after consulting your M.D.

I hear ya with the knee pain. I thought it was the prednisone, but it was the Lipitor. I was crawling on the floor and crying in pain. It is gone now, but now I have major muscle weakess throughout body. I guess it is always something
