Is Sense of Taste Being Affected By Meds?

0 Recommendations

Used to eat Jif peanut butter right from the Jar. Loved it. Now ALL peanuts and peanut butter has a "burnt" taste to me. So does some chocolate. (So much for the Reeses). Anyone else have this happen? I have been on pred for a year & 3 months for FSGS. Protein still ranges from 1 to 3. Been through the cyclosporin "let's see what happens" stage and am now on pred and cellcept. Thanks in advance. NSC members rock! (Dux, you out there? ;~))

CellCept Cyclosporine Prednisone

I've found that, when I'm on the meds, I have a strange "metallic" taste in my mouth most of the time. A majority of the time things taste "off" from what I"m accustomed to. Like last night...I was eating a caramel apple (I know..bad but oh so good!). Anyway, it was just weird..and completely unsatisfying...

Same here, everything has changed since prednisone. Only satisfaction for me are citrus flavors whether fruit, gum, popsicles, anything with orange lemon or lime flavor.

with how hungry this damn medicine makes me, I wish I would lose my sense of taste!! The only thing that has stopped me from eating is that my stomache is so damn swollen from the ascites I can barely breathe let alone swallow!

I've had NS for 17 years now and am currently on cyclosporine. My sense of taste has been affected in that I cannot tell a really good wine from the $5.99 screwtop special. Actually, I don't even enjoy wine any more although I will occasionally have a cocktail if we are out somewhere. My husband says I'm a cheap date these days:-) I think it's to do with the acidity in wine - likewise citrus doesn't taste as good any more or anything too vinegary. Unfortunately, my sweet tooth is still intact, more's the pity...

Yep i am just like britabroad. I use to love my wine. Can't stand it anymore. I don't know what stage any of you are but some food smells just take my breath away and make me feel nausous. It's a shame considering i love to cook even though i can't eat much anymore. I have entered stage 5 so i have a general ill feeling all of the time anyway. On good days (very few) we like to go out and watch the football games. I have 1 drink, cranberry and vodka (tell them to make it light) and take bottled water with me. I tell my husband the same thing about being a cheap date because i can't eat any of the food out either. God i want my life back!!!!

I couldn't handle sweets when I was on prednisone. I normally have a HUGE sweet tooth, but they lost all flavor to me except an overwhelmingly sugary taste. It was really strange to be hungry all the time but not craving the chocolate or ice cream I usually wanted!

you shouldnt be eating that krap anyway!

Crimeny, doesn't seem to me that anyone is eating crap. Everyone deserves a treat now and then and some people aren't on a restricted diet other than sodium anyway. That was a rude comment!!!!! This site is to help people feel better not worse!!!!

I love to cook and always had very developed taste buds but the meds really dulled them to the extent that I was eating pickled jalapenos out of the jar - something I couldn't do when I was "normal". Now I eat highly spiced food - lots of chilli, garlic and ginger! yum! I also occasionally break out and get stuck into choccy icecream or anything else that takes my fancy - you have to be naughtly sometimes and life's too short. Enjoy!

Meds absolutely change your sense of taste. Each time we play with my meds, I have to try to figure out what will taste good.

This is a good discussion. I have 3 year old who is on prednisone for last 15 months. He can not expresss what he feels like. After reading, I somewhat understand what he is going through. Very painful. But this is better than not knowing at al.
