Is bactrim necessary with cyclosporine?

0 Recommendations

I am on 300mg of cyclosporine per day (my diagnosis is MCD). My neph wants me to take low dose bactrim (that is, three days per week instead of daily) while I'm on cyclosporine as a safeguard against infections. Is this necessary? I took the bactrim for a few months but did not renew the script. I have had no noticeable incidence of infections of any kind while on cyclosporine and I am uncomfortable being on an antibiotic for an indefinite period of time. What recommendations have others received from their doctors?

Hi I am on bactrim also. I work in the health care field, so I need to take it because I have patient contact and body fluids. I take it 3 times weekly 800. I m on cellcept 1500mg per day ,The meds. lower my resistance.

I work in a hospital. What do you do that might put you at risk.

hope this helps

My daughter was put on bactrim when she started taking cytoxan. Her doctors told us the same thing about protecting against illness due to a decreased immune system.

I didn't take any long term antibiotics while on cyclosporine. I got sick once during the 1.5 years I took it. I got better after a week of rest -- no doctor visit required.

Are you at a higher risk of getting sick? I'd be apprehensive about taking long term antibiotics also.

I have heard of several people with kidney disease that have to stay on low doses of antibiotics, even without being on any of the immunosuppressants. I think you are more prone to illnesses and it usually takes longer to recover, when the kidneys are not functioning very well.

After my mom's transplant, she was on Bactrim for a year...it is the protocol at that hospital....and she has been on it also for the past 3 months, due to chronic urinary tract infections. Aparently it is a pretty safe antibiotic, or they would not let people remain on it that long.

Just my guess :-)

Hey there... my first go round of steroids I was not put on it... he just told me to watch it very closely and to get to the doctor if I saw the smallest infection... However, I have started my second round (I had been in remission) and he did put me on Bactrim (I take the generic form)... When he was deciding if I should be on it he asked me if there was a change in my employment (there was- I now work in a school- just a few germs there!)... He also asked me about other children I could possibly be around- well, I have 2 nieces and 2 nephews under the age of 3 that I now get to see all the time... Those are the two things that really put him over on me taking it... He also put me on it 3 times a week... I was reluctant at first but I asked him to explain to me why and he told me it was because of all the germs I could be exposed to... I asked about coming off of it for the summer but since I was still doing tutoring around the students and my nieces and nephews that he wanted me to stay on it...

I hope that helps...
