High Blood Pressure

Okay so I went to the doctor the other day and for some reason my blood pressure is high. Normally the meds control it, but for some reason they are not. She upped my lisinopril (bp meds) from 5mg to 20 mg. I now have to monitor my blood pressure at home and take a log and give it to the doctor. I am worried that this means my kidneys are progressing further into failure, but I am not sure. Am I looking into this too far, or just paranoid? My husband tells me to calm down and stop freaking out, but really with all that happens to me it is hard. Thanks for the advice!

Ever since I started keeping my sodium down to about 1,000 mg a day my bp went way down and has stayed down, I am taking Lisinopril 10mg and I monitor it at home with my wrist monitor. My bp has been holding steady in a good range in the 120s / 60s-low 70s.

Before I paid attention to my sodium it was usually way over 140/80 range and I had a couple of major dizzy spells that lasted hours. It freaked me out and the nurses I talked with said it could be the sodium intake... it was

I have Secondary FSGS stage 4 right now

My kidneys are still functioning, so that is why I am worried it is a sign of more to come. Mine was 130/102, so it's my bottom number that is high. The doctor told me younger people have a higher lower number and older people have a higher top number. I am just scared.... I feel it's hard not to be.

Today was not as good. My blood pressure was 144/125. I do not know a lot, but I know that blood pressure is very important, I just worry it will make my kidneys start to fail, I know once they do if you don't control it that they may fail faster. My meds have always controlled it. This is the first time I have had a problem.

Have you spoken with your doctors? They could definitely help you more then we ever could on this one!
I am on 2 BP meds! I have 20 mgs of Lisinipril and 50 of Lopressor. Now they want me on 2 cholesterol meds!! I have put a call into my nephro on this one. I am worried about being on 2 statins!!

Hey there... in the log are you also keeping what is happening around you? Mine does that every once in awhile (spikes really bad!) and my doctor always gives me one month to bring it down (the highest it ever was was 183/121 but I have it back down to 120/85)... I do check mine at home and I keep a log but he has me also keep how my day was, what happened, etc. (For example, Thursday it was a little higher but it was the first day of school)... He also has me keep when I go to sleep and when I get up and how I feel... we have noticed that it tends to be a little higher if I am tired... Of course, I'm on 3 bp meds because of the prednisone but the dosages are lower this time than when I was on it last time...

Mine was going crazy when I had a ton of stuff going on: end of the school year, presenations, graduations, etc...: My neph also asked me to log, but he suggested taking it at the same time of day. Its funny what can effect your bp...coffee, pop, candy, etc. I haven't had any problems and I am on 20mg. Its actually good for your kidneys to be on these meds. It is so hard not to freak out...I am a total freaker! But just take it easy, exercise, eat right, etc. My neph wanted to up to as much as I could handle just so it would soothe my kidneys.

It is so nice to have some one to talk to and see what everyone else is going through... Take care..

Bloodpressure should be measured when you are "at rest". We take it when we have been sitting in bed, reading. You will find that then the BP is usually down from the doctor's office. We take it sometimes at night and sometimes in the morning. Of course when you take meds it is better to wait at least onehour so they kick in.

Hey,
I also still have good kidney function and have been on meds a while. I take lisinipil 5mg and usually my blood pressure is to low. Dr took me off the pills and then it was way high 152/98. I went back on them. Anyway I was just at the dr's and my kidneys are doing better than ever so I don't think that your blood pressure always has something to do with your kidneys because my kidneys where bad and my blood pressure good before. Good luck!

When my family doctor wants to change a medication, I request that he/she discusses it first with my nephrologist, and let me know the outcome of that discussion. I don't believe that the patient should be the go-between for his/her doctors. I do believe that it is professional, and reasonable, to expect the care givers to consult with each other before they make changes in the care or cure.

Aweson-

When ever your BP is that way again, I would call someone ASAP. Of course it is always bad for your BP to be high, but the closer that the numbers are together(140/120 vs. 140/90), the more dangerous it is.....that is what I have always been told. I have also been told that the bottom number being high is more related to cardio than anything else, but maybe that doc was nuts? My BP stays high and you would faint if you knew how many BP meds/ dosages I am on, but my bottom number is usually around 59-70.

Here is my list and I still cannot control my BP:

Lisinopril--40mg 2x daily (max dose)
Cardizem--360mg 1x daily...just increased to 420mg (max)
Hyzaar-- 50/12.5mg 2 x daily (max dose)
Tekturna--150mg 1x daily....just increased to 300mg (max)
Crestor--cholesterol
Lovaza--triglycerides/ BP
Plavix--blood thinner
aspirin--blood thinner
Pletal--makes blood cells slicker to fit into tiny places
prednisone--70mg every other day

I am maxed out on the BP dosages now and they may have to start another. Not everyone has high blood pressure w/ FSGS though. I didn't start having high blood pressure until my GFR was around 38-40....it's now 26.
