GOUT anyone?

0 Recommendations

Steven has developed a very sore big toe and first was given an antibiotic for infection but now the diagnosis changed to gout!! Guess what? 50 mg prednisone for three days and then back to where he was at seven and a half mg every other day. To-day is the last day of the 50 mg and we just hope that the toe recovers as it has been very painful. anyone else got this complication? I read that cyclosporine-he takes 100 mg twice a day - can lead to gout i.e. higher level of uric acid in the blood. This causes the uric acid crystals in the joint, hence the pain of gout.

Hello there. Yes, I believe that the cyclosporine is the culprit, I used to suffer from bouts of gout, which ceased when I stopped taking the cyclo. I used to have to avoid food/drink high in purines, mainly red meat, seafood, chocolate and alcohol. The one thing I remember when trying to deal with it; there seems to be a lot of conflicting opinion regarding what triggers gout and what helps it. Some research seems to indicate sugar is beneficial, others that it can aggravate flareups, etc. Good luck!

My daughter has also developed gout secondary to cyclosporine. We are not able to wean her off the cyclosporine (she too in on 100mg twice a day) and can't keep the gout in check so the doctor has her on allopurinol 100mg twice a day. It helps, I give her natural cherry juice or fresh cherries when it is really bad. Recently she developed nodules on her arm, hands, ankles, but they are not sure if they are related. We will know after they remove one. She takes warm showers for the pain since she can't take pain meds. Good luck. God Bless, Renea

Thank you both for your answers. It points to gout for sure and we will learn about the low purine foods. A friend of ours is also taking the allopurinol - he is not a kidney patient - but Steven already takes 13 meds and we hate to add another to it. he feels that he is "toxic" already. We see the doctor to-morrow and will hear his assessment.
Reneaorr, the bumps may be the tophi that are a sign of gout or uric acid crystal deposits that i have read about. Steven also has a bump on the bottom of his toe and we were wondering about that as well.
The diuretics also cause uric acid retention, did you know that? Steven takes 2 kinds for the edema in his legs/feet.
I think of you all and it helps to have somewhere where we can voice our concerns and learn what others have gone through.
Bless,
Amelie

I've had gout but never been on cyclosporine. Boy is gout painful as I am sure your husband can attest! I found that allopurinol REALLY helps with the pain so your husband might want to reconsider, even though it would mean taking an additional pill.

Hope he gets better soon!

Thank you. We are seeing the doctor to-day for a follow up and your suggestion for allopurinol is already on our list to discuss. You are right that if it helps it is only another pill - making it #14!!
His toe is still "sore" but not the horrible piercing pain.

One of my doctors gave me Colchicine for goat, 0.6mg as needed. Once my big toe starts hurting I take one pill a day. Three days seems to take care of it. I am also on a bunch of meds. I feel like I am a major asset on the pharmacy baclance sheet... I also take 100mg of Allopurinol.

Thank you all for your input. his toe does not hurt anymore and we just hope that this was a "one off'
attack. The "hit and run" dosage of 50 mg prednisone
for 3 days and then another 2 days did the job.
