Different sized Kidneys?

0 Recommendations

HI, My son was just diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome after his kindergarten physical showed high protein. The neph had an ultrasound taken of his kidneys. Fairly soon after that, they referred us to a pediatric neph 4 hours away (we live in the country). When we got there, one of the things they noticed was that one kidney was smaller than normal and the other larger than normal. Total kidney function was at abot 50% also. Has anyone faced this scenario before, and what were the results?

Yes I was diagnosed with one kidney smaller and the other larger than normal. I was diagnosed when I was a child. But it wasn't until I was 49 that I was diagnosed with protiene in my urine. I also have fsgs. My kidney function is 39%. As for the different size kidneys I wouldn't worry about that. But I would check into why he is spilling protiene into the urine and try and get that under control. Good luck to you and your son.

Thank you for your response. My husband and I thought that the difference in size was probably the way he was made. Yet, I also wondered if the disease could cause this too.. We have him on pred. for his protein and Enalapril for high blood pressure. Thanks again.

The only other person I personally know with FSGS is a young man 18 yrs old. He was diagnosed with FSGS when he was very young and he had kidney surgery around 4 yrs. old. One of his kidneys is much smaller than the normal other kidney. The surgery was an effort to get more function from the small kidney. He is doing real well. He recently transferred to my neph who put him on a diet and he plays sports and does not seem to have any problem with the FSGS at the present time.
