Swollen scrotum

Hi, i was just wondering if anyone else has had problems with a swollen scrotum? My son was diagnosed with MCD 5 months ago at the age of 2. He relapsed and this time really swelled and his scrotum is huge. We were in the hospital and received 3 albumin treatments and once his bld levels seemed stable we were sent hm with the swollen scrotum and were told it would go down over time. Well it's been 6 days, and while it has gone down a little, it is still very swollen. My son is so uncomfortable and will not even attempt to walk! Ive tried to put some supports in his diaper to hold the scrotum, but he says they hurt. I'm at a loss. So I was wondering if it is normal to have it so swollen for weeks? And is it
Normal for a dr. To send a child home like that? And if anyone has a solution to help me to get him to walk. Please if anyone can help I'd love to hear to from you!

Hi there,
my son is 2 yo and he had the same issue when he got sick.
Our drs say he shoud never get this way again. He has been sick a couple of times and has retained water but we have been going front and back to hospital to get albumine infusions until he gets better and can hold his albumin himself.
I think you should get help for him. It´s not good for him to have pain and be sick.
Good luck!

When I first fell ill, I was advised by my neph to use compression stockings. I tried them and because they pushed up the fluid into the rest of my body, the fluid then lodged in a very uneven way in a very unexpected part of my anatomy, in the same area as you post about - the result being visually quite grotesque and very unsettling for me!! I of course hastily consulted my nephrologist who, while he understood my reaction, didn't seem all that worried about it.... needless to say the compression stockings got the boot, as it were....

In your son's case the pressure could have a quite painful effect given the locality of the swelling, while the issue is not necessarily dangerous, I would hope they could recommend some form of treatment.

my son, though 21...had the same problem a month ago, when we went to er, the admitted him ...they had him on iv lasix, and within a week ,they had taken off 22 lbs of fluid.....got a few questions....his your son on prednisone?.....lasix?...my son's blood pressure was up, his foreskin was over the head...all this was fluid.....they said that some swelling was due to prednisone, but his kidney function levels were ALL out of whack.....they said that he was spilling protein into his urine....i think in your sons condition, you may want to see if they can check protein ,creatine levels,..dont know if it will be out of whack for your son...but it was for mine....he is now home...with lasix(double edged sword when it comes to kidneys)...cuz may pull to much fluid off,we have to do daily weights, but so far so good........good luck!

I had the same problem. While initially horrifying, everything completely went back to normal. I think that swelling took longer than the rest of the body.

I had the exact same issue and it did not go away until I was put on a combination of diuretics. I was put on high doses of lasix which did nothing at first. They had to put me on metolazone as well. Once those kicked it I was was urinating every 5-10 minutes and I lost a ton of water weight. I was swollen from my waist down to my toes to the point I couldn't fit into some of my clothes or shoes. Best feeling in the world to see all that swelling go down. It did nothing for the underlying FSGS but help to aleviate one very unconfortable symptom.

My son had it some 9 months back. We had to go for peritonial dialysis to reduce his weight.Plus human plasma transfusion.
Initially Drs gave lasix plus biduret-L but that was not sufficient.

He is about 6 years. Later he was diagnosed with FSGS. He is on cyclosporin-A.
I would suggest you provide him sufficient scrotal support with soft cotton pads.
He shouldn't touch the scrotum. Otherwise, he may contract some infection.

It is good to reduce his weight with Dr's advice. If you are giving fluids, please try sweetlime juice. It may help to urinate.

Is he taking prednisolone? Has he gone for kidney biopsy?
let us know.

I have FSGS, am 37, and the same thing happens to me sometimes (well, not the scrotum part :), but the swelling in that general vicinity). I was ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED when it first started happening...so terribly demeaning and degrading. And honestly, for me, the only things that helps is lying down with my hips/legs above my head. If I have a long day of standing, like say lately when I'm unpacking my house still, I know I'm going to be in trouble in this area. The point is, you're not alone, and neither is your little boy. I know it may not help, but it's out there. I hope he feels better soon.

Thank you everyone for your responses! My son was diagnosed with MC. But because he relapsed so quickly this last time they are not sure. What happened to him was this: he relapsed and they gave him pred. And he tarted responding well. Then he got a stomach virus and his protien levels were crazy. He was admitted into the hospital for dehydration and they had to pump him with fluids which, because of his protein levels caused him to swell. Now he looks pretty normal except for some facial, minor stomach, and then of course, the large scrotum. It just pains me because he doesn't want to play because he is in so much pain.

The question is if he was diagnosed after doing a kidney biopsy. From our experience, it may be better to start with cyclosporinA or any other immunosuppresant that is most appropriate for him. Predisolone side effects are more for some than the effect. Your doctor should take a call. Predisolone can be tapered in due course of time. Please continue providing sufficient scrotal support. The scrotum should be raised well and supported.
If you are giving predisolone, please check with your doctor if your kid should be given any antacid tablets like pantoprazol.

Thank you so much for your suggestions. No we have not had a biopsy done. But my doc sd that if he relapses one more time we probably will do one. We went to three different specialist yesterday about his scrotal swelling and they all sd the same thing: that elevation, bed rest, and time would heal it. So he has been in bed all day.
We will continue the Lasix and another diaretic tonight and I will pray that all our efforts will be sufficient. Thanks everyone for ur comments and support. Xx

If he's on Lasix and it's not having a very strong effect, try reducing sodium in the diet - almost everything you eat has some in it, to reduce it enough you will need to hunt up fresh foods and stop chips/manufactured foods until it's under control... I was on pretty big doses of about 150mg and even that didn't do a thing until I removed most of the sodium from my diet.

....And even when the Lasix starts working, he needs to keep drinking fluids to prevent dehydration....
