To Forteo or not to Forteo?

Hi all--

I've just discovered this excellent site and would like to hear others' experiences with taking Forteo.

I am 58 and have been swallowing Fosamax weekly for years. While my spine remains osteopenic, my hip has gotten worse and is frankly osteoporotic, at -3.07. This despite years of weightlifting, taking calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium, and following a mostly vegetarian diet. I feel fine, and thankfully have had no fractures.

The docs want me to do a two year course of Forteo, but I am loath not only to inject myself daily, but also to take this drug which is so new, relatively untried, and the cause of bone cancer in rats.

It's frustrating that an apparently effective treatment with a lower incidence of side effects, strontium ranelate, is available in Europe but not here. I am going to discuss using strontium supplementation therapy with my doctor, perhaps for a year, and see what happens. Nevertheless, I'd be interested in how people are tolerating Forteo.

Thanks for the opportunity to give and take on this important topic, fellow sisters of the shrinking bone.
