I was diagnosed at age 60 with Celiac Disease - an autoimmune disease that is genetic and makes one intolerant to gluten. This causes some nasty gastrointestinal reactions if wheat, rye, or barley are ingested. Unless the patient is aware of the disease and adheres strictly to a 100% gluten-free diet, there will be serious damage to the villi and resultant malabsorption of nutrients.
Unfortunately, I was not dx'ed with osteoporosis until age 66, because I'm male and had not noticed that I had lost 2-1/2" of height. It is not uncommon for people with CD to also get osteo, due to the long-term lack of nutrition.
