I received my first Reclast IV in the spring of 2007. I did not immediately have any side effects from the infusion. Several weeks later I began having severe fatigue that would last for several days or weeks and then stop, only to return later. This happened several times during that year.
In August of 2008 I had my second Reclast IV. The folowing morning I woke up with so much pain in my bones and muscles that I could get out of bed for only necessities for a month. I had no fever. After the month of barely functioning, I called my primary physician who called my osteoporosis physician who then called me and told me that my symptoms were not related to the Reclast IV. I knew better, as I had never had anything like that before happen to me. By the end of 6 months I still had the severe fatigue in the mornings but could get a little work done in the afternoon before my energy vanished.
In January of 2009 I developed two abscessed teeth. My dentist was unable to extract the teeth because I had been on bisphosphonates. My osteoporosis doctor had me have lab work done and take a round of antibiotics before the teeth could be pulled. I went through a month of agonizing pain 24/7 and became very toxic from all the infection in my mouth.
Since the teeth have been extracted, I no longer have the pain in my mouth, but my energy level has gone so low that I can no longer do my housework or do the things that I previously enjoyed, such as cooking, playing the piano and organ and gardening.
I recently spent 5 days at a Mayo Clinic hoping they could find a way to help me get symptom relief. So far, I am worse on the program they prescribed.
Sometimes the quality of my life is so poor that I thinking longingly of going to sleep and never waking up. I am not suicidal, but there is so little in life now that brings me pleasure.
I personally think that Reclast should be taken off the market.
