Want to have a baby but on Actonel

0 Recommendations

I am 27 Years old. I was Diagnosed with osteopenia when I was 18. I fell down some stairs and had a compression fracture at T7 in my back. I have been on Actonel since then. My bone mineral densitometry scans have been getting better every year. I have had them every year since I am considered high risk (my grandmother had osteoperosis- she has been on fossomax and now is considered to have osteopenia). My last scan has now put me in the category of not being high risk so now I can only have a scan every two years.

I want to have a baby in the next few years but I am worried about the effects of actonel on having a baby. Does anyone know or read anything that says it is a problem. The only articles I have read have said that research has not determined whether or not there is a risk for a fetus. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am going to talk to my doctor about it at my yearly appointment in October.

I have no idea about the effects of Actonel related to pregnancy. But, you have been on Actonel for nine years. Isn't it wise to take a break from the Actonel anyway?

Nancy,
Thank you for replying to my post.
The last time I spoke to my doctor she thought it would be best that I stay on it as my bone density is improving. I have my physical coming up soon so I am going to let her know that I want to have a baby in a few years and see what she recommends that I do. I just wish there was research on what it can do to an unborn fetus.

Erica, I spoke with the company that manufacturers Actonel. The concern seems that it would be with skeleton and fracture risk with pregnancy which should be discussed with your health physician. But also, there isn't any data on Actonel and the fetus. Hopefully, other community members that have been pregnant while also taking Actonel will be more helpful. Sandi

Nancy, there are many people that have continued with the meds without a meds holiday. The older we get, the more possibility of fracture ... so we must weigh the benefits versus the possibility of risk. And the operative word is "possibility".

Hi - I have taken Actonel and then went on to have another baby. I stop taking in about 3 months before getting pregnant. I breastfeed for 3 months then started taking it again. My Endo told me that while you are pregnant your body is doing all the right things to protect your bones. My baby girl is now 2 and is healthy and developing just fine. I would be interested to hear how your appointment went this month. I think everybody has different issues.
