Has anyone tried voltaren gel? I heard it is used for knee and hand OA. I want to try it for my hip pain. Thanks.

My sister's doctor prescribed it for her instead of the pills because she is having limited kidney function. She said it is really helping her pain but I an not aware of the side effects.

Voltaren tabs were ineffective for me. I found out that the gel is available in India (as diclofenac sodium) and have had firends bring it from there and using it for 7 years now. The gel provides immediate relief for me for hours, unfortunately the relief is not permanent. I typically use it after shower every morning and at bed time for my back and neck. I get to sleep well because of it, the difference literally is like night and day for me. Without the gel, I have a hard time sleeping. I have not had any side effects. Also the gel costs about 90% less purchased from India compared to buying it here locally in US.
Yes, I've used Voltaren gel, primarily on my hips and shoulders. It is at least moderately effective. The listed side effects, however, are scary -- the same as for any orally ingested NSAID. I always feel that a drug absorbed transdermally, rather than by mouth, is safer, but I'm not sure that's true. My pharmacist indicated that you can take more than indicated on the label, but shouldn't use it like a liniment, either,
Hope this helps...
Pam
