Update on Denosumab

0 Recommendations

Hi All: Today a news article was released on Amgen's Osteoporosis Drug Denosumab. They are currently in the Phase III trials, but this news may cause a set back.

Doctors recently reported an increase in community-acquired infections with those taking Denosumab. I'm not sure what affect this will have on the FDA's possible approval of the drug. Actually this article seems pretty vague to me. If you hear anymore about this please post.

Memory Osteoporosis

Hi Windblown,
The latest thing I saw mentioned the increased infections and also some neoplasms. That seems to be a continuous problem with antibody therapy - it adversely affects the immune system - see Embrel or Humira. It's a risk/benefit assessment - like most drugs. Someone will have a bad reaction to it, but others may benefit.
If I see anything new on this I'll let you know.

Hi Duranee1: Thanks for your input... I've been following this drug, thinking that it might prove to be another choice for treatment in the future, so we'll just have to see what happens.

I talked to my Dr about it, and she mentioned (her opinion) that she wasn't sure it would get approved and her reasoning was the fact that it is a monoclonal antibody, which in her words is a tricky thing to use for any type of medical treatments. She also mentioned that there have been some reports of anaphylactic shock reported in the trials, but I can't find any literature to confirm her statement. The Dr also mentioned another allergic reaction associated with it, but I can't remember what type of allergy she said, do you know what that might have been? Oh, I guess I'm loosing my memory :)

Thanks again...
