update and running machine

Hi all and thank you for the advice to my recent post.

Having now attended an app. with new consultant I have been advised that as my bone density increased by only 10% to -3.42 in the year after fracturing after having my daughter, that it isn't possible my Osteo was caused by the pregnancy alone. For others in similar position my UK consultant (well know in his field) suggests a rise of 30% plus would indicate pregnancy induced Osteo. He also suggests at age 33 i avoid taking any drugs, that the risks don't outway the benefits at my age. In time he advises this will alter and drugs may be the way forward. Hope this doesn't scare anyone as of course everyones situation is different. He is again testing me for any underlying conditions.

What i wanted to ask is if anyone has invested in a running machine/treadmill as a way of building bone density? It is difficult to go for a walk with a two year old? I was thinking i would just power walk to begin with. Need some idea of how to build bone density naturally and absolutly no luck with any local Physios.

Lots of press in UK for new drug Denosumb (hope spelling correct). Not licensed yet but good results with twice yearly injection.

Take care all x

Sorry you have been waiting for a reply. I've bumped up some previous discussion posts on treadmills which may be helpful. Using Search will bring up any previous discussions on osteoporosis related subjects. Hope this helps. Sandi

thank you. Hadn't realised could search!! Ha ha

Hi NCH:
I do not like treadmills and do not recommend them to my clients or support group members. They provide adequate bone building but little balance benefits. You would be better served with a well designed functional weight training program accompanied by a BOSU ball or jump rope.

Here is another post I had few weeks back.

Your basement or garage is plenty of space to create a good workout that will be far superior to the treadmill or elliptical. Here are some suggestions:

1. Buy a beach ball and try to bounce it off the wall fifty times without it touching the floor. 2. Do wall touches where you run (or walk quickly) side to side and touch two opposite walls 50 times.
3. Try the double cross by running (or walking) forward four steps. Now back up eight steps. Come forward four steps and go to the left four steps. Now go back to the right eight steps. Come back to the center four steps and repeat.
4. Buy a basketball or playground ball and bounce it 50 times as you move around in a big circle. Try it with your right and then your left hand. When you get really good switch back and forth.

10 to 15 minutes of this activity to start working up to 30 minutes 3 times a week is all you need. It doesn’t take much to get a great cardio workout which also provides balance, body fat control, coordination, body control and weight bearing.

Woody McMahon

Dear Woody
Very kind of you to go into such detail for me, I really appreciate it.
I have to be careful as my fractured vertabra still cause me pain 2 years on, I think due to change in posture. I'm also probably over bothered of causing any further injury that would prevent me from looking after my daughter. I will certainly try the workout, I can just take it easy to begin with.

I'm also thinking about going to line dancing lessons?

Thank you so much

Thanks for the update. I actually had read this one, but didn't realize it was the same person from the earlier post.

Woody has made me think twice about investing in a treadmill. I think I will look at purchasing a recumbent bicycle for home use. It is suppose to be very good for building hip bone. Has anyone heard of the benefits of this type of bicycle? I will continue doing weights and circuit training at the gym.

I bought a wii fit last year, its very good if you cant get out and walk. It would come in handy for your 2 year old as well!! I find the balance exercises good, yoga and muscle are good as well. You can also get other types of exercise programmes as well.
I do other exercises as well, but theres nothing like variety!
