Treadmill vs outdoor walking. Oh my GAWD!

0 Recommendations

I am posting with tail beween my legs! Imagine priding myself w/a 12:30 minute mile on the treadmill. All started when I had to walk outdoors while visiting my son in Philly. Walked an hour everyday, thinking I had easily walked my four miles. Back to Nashville. Back on treadmill. Today. Just walked outdoors. Can't breathe. Sweating. Huffing. Puffing. Face red hot. Thought I was going to faint. Felt it best to stop. Timed my walk. Twenty-nine minutes. Jumped in COLD shower. Breathing better now. Face normal color. Drove mileage I walked. Two frigging miles. Ahhh. Regrouping.

GRANDmother19, how about giving yourself some credit for walking? When I started walking, I was lucky if I maintained for 10 minutes!! But we have to start somewhere. Now I easily walk at least 5 miles. Please keep in mind with osteoporosis, it is not the destination, but the journey. I think you are doing great! Sandi

Oh Sandi. I am just getting a kick out of myself. I am very happy actually with my workout, rather I really mean my commitment to do it. I was one of those women who joined a gym, paid all of the money up front, and lasted about a month. Twice! It is unfortunate that I had to get so ill to ever begin to take care of myself. Like people who only quit smoking after they get emphysema or lung cancer. I was a workaholic. Now I am something else. Thanks for your kind support.

I walk every weekday morning for 30 minutes on my way to work
I walk part way (30 min) and then catch a streetcar for the rest of the way
I also listen to my mp3 player
walking is a great exercise and makes me feel invigorated

I hate to be a wet blanket (as usual) but 12 1/2 minute mile is a crisp jog if not a run, unless you have long spindly legs or something. Treadmill measures can be as much as 20% off. OR if you are holding on to something or leaning on it you are getting a lot of help to move faster. Outdoors you did a 15 minute mile, which is 4 miles per hour, a good fast walk and very demanding for a beginner. Best to slow down a litle and go farther. Then when you get used to it, try to increase speed.

GRANDmother19~

I just wanted to say..."thank you for the laugh" in regards to your title! I got a good chuckle at the "oh my GAWD!"

You are an inspiration to all of us who wish we could walk 2 miles a day! :)

Keep up the good work.

Cyn

MamaMarks. Thanks. I think a "chuckle" is always good for the soul (or brain DBM). Laughter is my favorite sound, after Adagio For Strings.

DBM, you are indeed the wet blanket "as usual," but that's what makes me look so forward to your posts. Without you I would feel like the blind leading or following the blind (in some cases that is; and me being one of the visually impaired). You know I love wrapping my brain around yours to soak in some of your DNA from which we ALL benefit. You ask questions that I wouldn't even think to ask. You formulate and articulate in ways that I certainly cannot. And still you are a part of "the team," who will challenge the status quo and guide so many of us to a greater understanding of the truth! I trust you DBM, based on my ability to recognize a detached approach. You are completely objective or present yourself as such. I operate too often on "feelings." You're the head. I'm the heart. Long journey between those two places; but I am certainly open to the short-cut!

Yep girlfriend, my 12:30 minute treadmill mile was set at 5.3 tops, and I WAS nearly jogging. I remember at the gym years ago, I worked up to 4.0 mph for an hour walk and of course it was a 15 minute mile. With my own treadmill, I warmed up at 3.5, then to 4.0, to 4.5, to 4.7, to 5.3 and at the end of the hour it turned out to be 4 miles. And I was nearly jogging. Clearly, it was off kilter; plus I was not using incline. I am going to continue walking outdoors. I think I will purchase the vest. Can't do free weight lifting with arms due to mastectomies and high risk of edema. Anyway, that's what I've been told.

You certainly work your ass off to stay well. And without complaint. That's humility. So few of us possess that quality.

Hi there. I'm wondering what vest you are referring to. I am new to the site and have never heard of this. I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia of the spine and hip and am getting on the program!
