Time of day to take Strontium Ranelate?

0 Recommendations

I am about to start taking Strontium Ranelate for the first time. I am aware that I have to take it two hours either side of any Calcium - presumably dairy plus supplements. For example, if I finish eating at say 9pm ready to take the medication at 11pm, is it OK to have a glass of wine in between these times - or any drink without milk - tea, coffee, water? I live in the Med and we eat and drink later here. Looking forward to your replies. Will also let you know if there are any side effects.

Hi there esporlesbabe,

I am still taking Strontium Ranelate. Have been since about mid August 09.

It isn't available in the US. Those on Strontium there, are on the Strontium Citrate which is an off the shelf product, not a pharmaceutical (prescription) medication.

Of course the rules are the same for both re times for taking it.

I have dinner and whatever time it finishes, I wait 2 or 3 hours before taking the strontium and I take it on an empty stomach. Water is OK between but I wouldn't take wine tea or coffee. It's a pain, I know.

Does anyone else have a drink other than water between times?

Actually coffee is no good for bone health anyway, if that's any consolation and I doubt it is! Alcohol in moderation because that's a bit of a no no too. Tea ia a bone of contention. Some say no go others say the flavonoids in tea protect you.

Sorry to spoil your day!

There have been times when the meal was late and I was tired so I have put the dose beside my bed and woken to take it around 2 or 3am. That seems to work, but I personally wouldn't like to make it a habit.

I am surviving the Str. Ranelate but the aspartame in it is still concerning me and I am sorely tempted to ship in the citrate version to here in Australia where it is unavailable.

I have less and less faith in the ethics of the drug companies and their charter to keep us from harm. The dollar rules.

Good luck with your quest for better bone health. Yes, please let us know how you fare.

Thanks AussieLass - Yup - you really ruined my day. But I have to honestly say that I did suspect that, just hoped to get away with it. You don't sound like you have had any problems with it, so that it great. Will write soon.

Buenos dias, Esporlesbabe ~

I, too, have taken strontium citrate (purchased over the internet)--since June. Since I wake up about every hour-and-a-half to two hours, I just put two capsules on my nightstand, and take it around 3:00 a.m., well away from when I have eaten or drank (drunk?) anything. Actually, I take an ibuprofen at the same time. I hope that doesn't interfere with the strontium.

I have an appointment with a naturopath in a couple of weeks and hopefully she'll have some ideas on what I can do to sleep through the night. If that does happen, (Heavenly Bliss!) I think I would take the strontium in the morning and then not eat for a couple of hours.

I've not experienced any side effects. And, sadly, AussieLass is correct--coffee isn't good for bone health--caffeine is the culprit.

Thank you SusanRae. The early morning idea is good. I don't really "need" coffee as such, it is only a social thing - I suppose that decaff would be OK. I am really sorry you are not sleeping - it makes any sort of pain/mental worries 200% more difficult to cope with. Hopefully your naturopath with come up with a brilliant idea. All the best.

ODDLY ENOUGH I PURCHASED MY FIRST LOT OF STRONTIUM - ITS CALLED STRONTIUM SUPORT 11 BY AOR AND I WAS ADVISED TO TAKE IT ON AN EMPTY STOMACH 1/2 HOUR FROM EATING. YET THE INSTRUCTIONS SAY TO TAKE ON AN EMPTY STOMACH, 2 BEFORE OR AFTER FOODS, CALCIUM OR MILK BUT ENSURE THAT DAILY CALCIUM INTAKE IS ADEQUATE. CALCIUM FOOD AND MILK PRODUCTS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE STRONTIUM ABSORPTION IF TAKEN AT THE SAME SITTING. .... HMMM WHOM IS CORRECT HERE?

I'VE NOT EVEN OPENED THE BOTTLE YET...

Hi. I have been taking strontium citrate, since the renalate form is not available here. I take it before I go to bed and about at least 3-4 hours after my last calcium intake. I read that you need at least 3 hours from the last calcium intake. I don't know if it is doing any good but I am trying. Don't know how I can obtain strontium renalate. Please let me know how you do. Thanks. tdes

Thank you all for your ideas. Like SusanRae I wake up every night, once or twice. I take a glass, spoon, water and Strontium Ranelate sachet to the bathroom in a prominent place and then in the morning I will know if I have taken it or not. The system hasn't failed yet! Have been taking it for nearing a month now. I am getting waves of nausea with hot flushes and it feels just like motion sickness. At times have had diarrhea too. I am assuming it is the medication. I get very carsick anyway but with this it is happening even when I am driving! I hope it goes soon but am not complaining too much because I see such sad and awful side affects on this site. Will keep you posted.

I just turned 63 years of age and have osteoporosis. Heaven only knows how I got it...I am not in the high risk group. Anyway, I am afraid of taking the biophosphanates and forteo. I do take strontium citrate, calcium and high amounts of vitamin D.
I started having back pain a few months ago. So now I have it every day. So I am not sure what to do. Don't want to overdo lifting weights or do too little as far as exercise or weight training. I need some mentoring. Maybe a good book? Not sure how to proceed. Tdes
