Taking Tamoxifen or Arimedex

0 Recommendations

I already have Osteoporosis and now may have to take either Tamoxifen or Arimidex as I have recently had a Lumpectomy for Breast Cancer. I see that Arimidex can also cause Osteoporosis and Tamoxifen has other side affects. What do I do? Anyone out there have this problem?

Hello joie, thank you for starting this discussion. Many diseases affect bone loss which adds more questions and concerns for us.

That is what concerns me. I don't know if i should take Arimedex as this is one of the main side affects, and I already have Osteoporosis. Tamoxifin has its own serious side affects .Anyone out there with this problem?

Personal opinion here : I don't happen to believe that a body without estrogen is a good idea, so I chose to take tamoxifen. But I'm lucky, my cancer was stage 1, grade 1, with clear margins. Both medications offer me, at most, a small anti-cancer factor, but after combining this with the bone support tamox offers, I felt the double benefit was worth possibility of blood clots, which are rare in my family.

Hey joie
My 88 year old Stepmother, took Tamoxifen for 6 years without any problems. I do not know if she has osteoporosis, she is very busy and walks for miles.
She beat the breast cancer and she did not worry about osteoporosis. Staying alive was her concern.

I had a lumpectomy in 2006 and I was prescribed Tamoxifen. I took it for two years and suffered badly with the side effects. When I had my routine visit to the surgeon I was told that the difference Tamoxifen made in my chances of recurrence of the cancer was only 1.4%. I stopped taking it straight away and after 1 year I have managed to lose 14 of the 35 pounds I had gained on the Tamoxifen.

Hi Jayay , what were your side affects with Tamoxifen besides weight gain? I am concerned with a possibliity of Blood Clots with Tamoxifen.
