Swine flu jab

0 Recommendations

Sorry this is not really on the subject of osteoporosis but I was wondering how people felt about the swine flu vaccination?

Because I have severe kyphoscoliosis and restricted breathing I have been advised to have the jab, due out next week. Normally I wouldn't worry but there has been some controversy over it's safety and I was wondering what the advice is in the U.S.A.?

Obviously I don't want to get swine flu, which is becoming more prevalent over here and could be very dangerous for someone like myself, but at the same time I don't want to risk serious side effects either.

Any advice please. Thank-you :)

Loods Hi. All i can tell U is this. My 54 year old Daughter took it. MY great Grandaughter who is One year old took it, Doing just fine but it still up to you.

Thank-you iola, that is very good news.

I would like to think that they haven't rolled out a vaccine that isn't considered safe - although all drugs hold a certain risk - as we all know!

At the end of the day the potential risk of swine flu probably outweighs the risk of the jab.

Thank-you for taking the time to post.

While you are wondering about what to do, can I assume you are boosting your immune system so maybe you don't need it? Of course, the obvious, Vit C (taken with zinc, helps absorbtion) , and maybe explore the Liposomal version that is more effective than IV methods and lots cheaper! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdm7AS8Qa-s.
And, Vit D3.
I have a document sent by an RN friend of mine, related to Flu prevention, and also a DETOX for those who DO take the immunization and want to protect their bodies. It is kinda too long for here so either email me or...Oh, I should post to my website. if there is interest, I'll do that. some simple measures...WASH YOUR HANDS! clean your nose with salt water, or use Neti pot. drink warm liquids and gargle. Hope this helps. I don't plan to get the shot. <G>. I'm sure I have enough heavy metals in me that I want to get rid of them.
Stay well. mb

Hi boomerbodycoach,

Thank-you for your help. I do everything I can to stay healthy i.e. eat well, take vitamin supplements, exercise and wash my hands ALL the time!

Unfortunately because of my genetic condition and body shape I am susceptible to infections particulary of the respiratory tract and despite taking every precaution necessary I still get chest infections each year. That is why my Doctor wants me to have the jab!

It's not an easy decision to make but the health authority over here are assuring us the vaccine is safe. Thank-you for your help.

Check out the www.mercola.com site. A lot of the controversies over it are covered there. That said, both my mother-in-law and husband have had it. So far, so good.

Thank-you milie123, I will check that web-site out!

I have never had a flu shot, and have never gotten the flu either. However, I believe I will get the shot for this flu as soon as it is availabe. I work with 2 people who had a positive diagnosis of H1N1 and they both said they have never experienced such forceful coughing in their lives. Both said their ribs and backs were so sore from the coughing. My opinion is that the risk of a rib fracture is probably greater for me than the risk of taking the shot.

RONJAY, THANKS FOR YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS, I NEVER CONSIDERED THE EFFECTS OF THE FLUE, IE COUGHING SO FORCEFULLY AND HAVING A FRACTURE OF THE BACK. I GUESS I WILL RETHINK GETTING THE SHOT.

INTERESTING THOUGHT ...

I'm really hoping the shot gets to our area before I get sick. I'm just now getting over a cold with some minor coughing that gave me back spasms that wrap around to my chest. Using a muscle relaxer helps, but I bet I need to see my acupuncturist to fix it. Last thing I need is this flu and that kind of coughing.

Thank-you Ronnijay I hadn't considered the coughing effect and I definitely should because I have already broken a rib from coughing!

I wouldn't want a rib fracture again, it was very painful.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I think all things considered I shall be taking the jab.

Loods and Everyone~

GET THE SHOT NOW!

I have heard repeatedly on the news how the H1N1 has turned out not as serious as experts had feared. Then I hear on the news that 20% of "older" people (over 50) that get it are dying. If the people in my workgroup all caught the virus, theoretically, one of us would die.

My sister-in-law, who is in no risk groups except she works part time as a teacher's aid, got the H1N1 virus. Which led to pneumonia. Then she got a major lung infection (either strep or staph--I forget) that TOTALLY shut down one lung. She had to be air lifted from a rural town to a large hospital 130 miles away. Two and a half weeks later she is still in a coma in critical care with a temperature fluctuating from normal to 103 (down from 107). She's doing lots better, but she's not out of the woods. The doctors are cautiously optimistic.

She did have the regular flu shot several weeks ago.

I had planned not to get the shot because I kept hearing how mild it is compared to the last time swine flu came around, but I have changed my mind.

So, get the shot now. That's my advice.

Susan

I am getting the shot tomorrow. I have a chronic condition so I qualify. I think it is an absolute no brainer to get it. H1N1 is proving not the be the mild flu that many , including Mercola proclaimed it to be. I think Mercola is flat wrong about this and the facts are starting to prove his advice is poor at best

Loods, I can only imagine how painful a broken rib could be. I just bruised a rib once, and I couldn't even turn over in bed.
If the vacccine doesn't get here soon, it may be too late for some of us. I did read though that there's speculation that high doses of Vitamin D may give some flu protection. Since most of us are taking lots of D, it would be wonderful if that is true. Maybe the D will stave it off until the vaccine arrives.

Thank-you everyone for your advice. It is quite a scary time and I will take the vaccine when offered it - I am just waiting for the phone call from my surgery to say the vaccines are in.

Of course in the meantime all we can do is keep as healthy as possible and as Ronnijay mentioned vitamin D has shown to be quite effective. I am very wary of people sneezing etc....and I constantly wash my hands but at the end of the day you can't shut yourself away.

SusanRae, I do hope your Sister-in-law gets better soon.

This is such a difficult decision. I have been offered the swine flu vaccine... but have had a bad reaction in the past to the regular flu vaccine and no longer have that. I have asthma - any cold goes 'onto my chest' and my asthma gets worse. It would seem the logical thing would be to have the jab, but there's so much negative press on the vaccine, that I'm as scared of the vaccine as swine flu now! There are a lot of medical staff refusing to take the jab - that does not instil confidence in the vaccine's safety.

I whole heartily agree with your feelings Lynney, it is not an easy decision to make but from the swine flu stories I have been reading the disease can kill, especially those more vulnerable.

Fortunately I have never had a bad reaction to the seasonal flu jab but I know people who have and they are reluctant to have any further vaccines - which I understand, 'once bitten twice shy'.

At the end of the day it has to be your decision. I'm not happy about having to take the vaccine but I'm not sure I would survive swine flu either! I hope you come to a decision that you feel happy with - best of luck.

Susan, your sister-in-law could be me. I'm sure I would be considered in the no risk group also, not sure if chronic back spasms and susceptible to pneumonia would count?

I work what is considered full-time (30 hrs/week) as a parapro (teacher's aid). I can only hope that most of the students I work with, most who would rather stay home, WILL stay home when sick. It is mostly an enclosed middle school classroom of about 10 students, so I don't have much contact with the general population of 850+, lessens my odds, but I want that shot ASAP.

I am not sure how many medical pros are turning the shot down.

I asked the nurse who gave me the shot and she said over 95% of nurses and docs at the research clinic I go to all got the shot. I think the press singles out a few who decline so they can have a better story and it seems like "many" when in fact it is a small number.

I would like to see the real numbers though.

Drizzit I agree with you - it would be interesting to know the exact figures.

Surely most medical professionals would take the vaccine to protect themselves and their patients, after all they are dealing with vulnerable people. I suspect the amount that don't take it is quite low but the media always blow these things out of proportion, so it is hard to tell.

Thought you might be of interested , what the Vitamin D Council has to say about taking D3 to help ward off the Swine Flu.
I might add, Taking 1000mg C, and zinc three times a day is important also..
