I was in a health food store yesterday to get some magnesium...the lady that helped me said that you should not take magnesium and calcium together. And also that you should take calcium at dinner time because that is the time that the body reabsorbs calcium. Is this something that any of us had heard before and is it true.

She also said it is better to take magnesium before bed time because it makes you sleep better...true?

I believe that magnesium can help you sleep better but all the supplements on market have calcium and magnesium combined???

Actually I have seen them separated...as Viactive has calcium, d & k...no magnesium...so that is why I just bought magnesium tablets. But I have also seen calcium, magnesium and zinc combined. I am hoping a dietician will help with this.

Does NOF have guidelines on what is necessary to take or do we have to find that out on our own...I am currently researching this. For example potassium...I had a dietician recommend taking 4700-to-5000mg per day. How do you get that much in food and how many pills do you have to take to make that up. If anyone has a supplement plan or can recommend someone to go to I would be interested.

Magnesium and calcium compete for absortion and should not be taken together. magnesium helps w/muscle relaxation but i don't tnink that is an indication to take it at bedtime.

I am a registered dietitian. As far as potassium is concerned....there is plenty of potassium in most fruits and vegetables and I would be very careful w/supplementating potassium unless you're taking potassium losing diuretics. It goes w/o saying that potassium supplementation is a no-no w/pts on dialysis therapy. potassium in excess for anyone can cause dangerous heart arrhythmias. This can occur as well if you have low potassium. Linda NY

I recently began taking magnesium as I read that it was a good idea to TAKE it when taking Calcium.. I take them together at night... the ratio was recommended as half magnesium to calcium. I take 600mg caltrate and the magnesium I bought only has about 40mg per tablet (I only take one a day). Ik think I will stop the magnesium altogether, just in case; until I next visit Dr.! Very confusing!!! Aida

thanks for the info....I have not yet and don't think I will take the supplement for potassium...it is so difficult to tell how much you are getting in your daily foods. But I am on my way to cutting out as much sugar (cookies, cakes) and wheat (a lot of bread) and using more whole wheat breads. also have cut back a REAL lot on caffine...only drinking 2 - 8oz cups of caffine free coffee per day. trying to use my calories for nutrition...not an easy transition.

I have started with a dietition but will prob be changing cause she is a little diff to understand and there is so much to learn.

I also have a list of trace vitamins and minerals and not sure if I should go out and buy bottles of these or if I can take them in one or 2 pills....almost impossible to tell what foods they are in and also too difficult to eat all those foods every day.

do you also have ostio and are ou taking supplements.

aida....it is very confusing I have a list of what I should be taking daily and I still can't figure it out. best to have a professional who you CAN talk to and have confidence in.

i'm not sure i understand what your reason is for considering potassium supplementation. For what purpose are you taking trace minerals? A good multivitamin w/minerals should be all a person would need unless there was a confirmed deficiency state. Are you dieting w/all of the things listed you were cutting back on ?? i'm 42 with a low of -2.7 on DXA: all my levels are in the negative but -2.7 is the lowest. I'm newly taking strontium citrate-check out some of the other correspondences and discussions on this web site. Caffeine is no good for osteoporosis so i'm glad you're cutting back. Linda NY

Linndy....I was given a list of bone building nutrients and potassium is listed as needing 4700-5000 per day and that most people only get 2300 per day. I tried to calculate how much I am getting in my food intake but it is too difficult. I have a dr appointment on Monday she is an endocronologist not a dietitican but I will see if she can give me some help with my nutrient intake also.

My dxa is -2.47 the rest is a tinsy bit better but I need to get my daily intake of nutrients worked out. I am not familar with strontium.....I was a little more interested in fosteum....at this point not sure of the difference between the 2 or which would be better foe me.

I take mine separately, calcium during the day and magnesium at bedtime. Because magnesium is good for the muscles and has somewhat of a relaxing nature for them, the bedtime use is the best for me as I also have fibromyalgia and nighttime is a 'tight" time for the muscles.
I have just read though that calcium should not be taken with high fibre food. Since my diet has a lot of fiber (macrobiotic diet), I don't really have a place in the day when I am not eating it. Jungling the meds and supplements and food seems to be quite the challenge!!

it certainly is a challange...I take them the same way I would if I were on medication...untill I can if ever reduce the amounts I have to take.

One question for anyone that might know...first thing in the morning I take a multi vitamin that has 450mg of calcium and 50mg of magnesium....is this a waste to take being that magnesium cancells out calcium...I also take calcium during the day and magnesium at night.

Hi...I've been taking citracal w,vit d and magnesium. I was told that vit d and the magnesium was essential for calcium aspsortion. You hear so many different things, after a while it's just too much..

I would advise caution when selecting a source of medical advice. 1) "Dietitian" and "nutritionist" are not the same. A registered dietitian must hold a college degree in his/her field and pass a state examination to be licensed for practice. A nutritionist can be self-educated or can have been trained in an unregulated program. 2) Working as a sales clerk in a health supplements store does not equal professional education. By the same token, writing an article in a lay publication does not guarantee the credentials of the writer or the validity of the information. Several posters to this thread have expressed confusion in such statements as "it's very confusing" and "are we on our own?" and "it's just too much [information]". 3) Points 1) and 2) suggest that consulting a board-certified physician for medical problems is a wise course of action. Nowadays I hear the sentiment (and not just on this board) that doctors are not to be trusted but somehow the kid in the health foods store is. Does that even make sense?

well I went to see the endocronologist today and the first thing I did when I got home was file a formal complaint on the SOB with my insurance company. Some of these "for lack of a better term" "medical professionals are there for almost any other reason except to administer good medicne on a professional
basis.

OK....next....another doctor.....maybe one that is trust worthy this time?

My multi vit pak has both 800 mg calcium and 400 mg magnesium as well as D3. I have been taking another product by the same manufacturer that has 400 mg calcium 200mg magnesium with D3, I take enough to equal 2000 mg of calcium daily. However I do add another D3 products to get me over 5000 IU's per day.

I "do not" take more than "500" mg at one time as we can't process more than that so I split them up during the day other than my multi pak.

You do need magnesium and D3 with calcium and most important without at least 500 mcg of B12 none of the above will do anything. My surgeons, nutrionist and my vitamin manufacturer has never said to split them and if we should not take them together why would they be in a multi-pak together?

I agree.. most of the bone builders on the market all have a combo of calcium and magnesium and I have researched that it is fine together!!!
