I started taking strontium citrate in June. Since that time, I have been experiencing loose bowels. Has anyone else had that symptom since starting strontium?
I never had that happen to me, but have you stopped taking Strontium to make sure it is causeing your problem?
I got terrible heart burn down the middle of my chest, and swollen ankles, which is better, but still get swollen all the time, since I have stopped taking strontium!
My Dr. cannot figure out why I have swollen ankles (mine where so thin before), but he just gives me water pills.
I do not think that is the answer for me.
I'm still trying to figure it out. As someone from a different post has said, go to a Potiatrist (sp?).
I'm calling today..
Take care,
April
April, I'm glad you're going to a specialist. I have my doubts it was the strontium, but a coincidence that one happened soon after taking the other.
I've had various aches and pains since starting it... but it is also gardening season and a lot more reasons for my aches, pains and other things than the taking of strontium. :-)
Hi Gatekeeper.
Thanks.. I did make an appointment for the Potistrist for next week.
The heart burn was so bad, I even went to my Heart Dr. Being that my ankles are thin, he didn't think it was a big deal!
My Drs say my circulations is great!!
When I don't take the water pill, even my Granddaughter said, Omg Grandma what happened to your ankle, its SOOO swollen!
When I called Drs. Bests, about the Strontium, they said there was not any salt in it, etc.
From what I have read, there is salt in Strontium, or it is a salt!
I'am not a salt eater. I cook with Herbs, and my blood pressure is low.
Sometimes a good health store knows more about your health , then the Drs. do!!
If you go off Strontium for a few days, does your pain go away?
Hope your feeling better.
Take Care,
April
Greetings ~
No side effects attritubable to strontium citrate since I started taking it in June. My ankles were a little swollen when I went to the doctor last week, but that happens frequently when it's hot out, or when I've had sodium, both of which applied last week. This has been going on long before strontium. I don't feel any different, good or bad.
Susan
Jonicar,
I've been on strontium citrate for almost a year, and can't attribute any side effects to that. I am loose in the bowels, but attribute that to the 600 mg of magnesium that I take every day. It's hard for me to believe that strontium could cause problems, but I guess our bodies are all different. If a person starts and stops a supplement and the side effect tracks, then it must be true (scientific method?)..
Tom
Tom,
I didn't realize that magnesium could cause loose bowels. I will decrease that and see if it helps. Thanks.
I've only missed a day here and there of the strontium so haven't noticed... but wasn't really paying attention. My pain goes away when I'm not working so hard in the yard. :) Like now, we're into triple digit week(s) and I don't do much for very long out there. So my hands are feeling better along with many other parts... Unless I sit at this computer too long.
Strontium is a type of sodium... but I'm not so sure it is similar in nature to sodium chloride (table salt). That would be a good one to ask a chemist... or perhaps your pharmacist might know. Btw, our bodies do need some sodium, spent last weekend in the hospital with my mom because hers was low.
I would say if your ankles are still swollen 5-7 days since taking strontium, it isn't the strontium. After all very few of us are spring chickens here. ;-)
That's why they put magnesium w/calcium, because calcium can do just the opposite. I believe Milk of Magnesia... is all magnesium?
Gatekeeper, It would be great to ask a Pharmacist, but none where I live even know about Strontium!,
But my Son has a good friend that is one..I'm going to ask him to check it out!
I get side effects most people just do not get.
I can't take Vit K, cause I get leg cramps.
The health food store I go to, said I'm the 3rd person (Women) that has the same problem with K..Go figure!!!
Omgosh Its that hot where your at?? And I thought Washington was a much cooler state all the time then California!
I live in the mountains near Yosemite. It's cooled down this week, but , Gee, Can't wait till we really get into Aug!! Yuck!
Since your a Master Gardener, you probably love this time of year, and the Spring-:)

April,
So I talked with my DH who graduated in Biochemistry, and became a computer network administrator (go figure)... thus he is a little rusty. He said, refer to a periodic table. I used this one:

<Warning "possible" chemistry lesson below>
Note Strontium (Sr) is in the same column as Calcium, meaning it is similar to it. (Why one doesn't take their strontium & calcium at the same time.) Sodium is in a different column, but that doesn't mean something like sodium chloride (table salt) and say sodium nitrate (saltpeter) have the same effects on the human body. The make up is in the chemistry, just because it has sodium does not mean it is even vaguely close to table salt. The question is what your body does with it once ingested.
After quizzing my hubby on this he said I had no business giving out advice/info that could effect someone's health. I hope all on any forum realize to always do their own research, I'm just a lay person on this stuff who's done a lot of research.
My question, where did you read that strontium has sodium in it? Since Strontium is an element in and of itself? And here's the molecular make-up of strontium citrate, note no Na (sodium) element: http://preview.tinyurl.com/lguxqg
Gatekeeper Thanks for all your information on Strontium, and taking up your time.
I'm guessing from what I'm reading on Strontium, when I read the word "Salt", I'm understanding that Strontium is a type of salt.
But apparently I'm wrong.
I have read the word salt like this:
http://www.vitaminexpress.com/product_info.php/products_id/1188
But I did get Terrible Heart burn from taking Strontium, where I have not read of anyone getting that type of a side effect!
The longer I took it the worse it got. I would stop taking it for a week or so, and it would go away, then I would take it again, and the pain was all the time.
When I stopped, it supsided, and I do not get any heart burn at all now...
I was really counting on taking Strontium, I must say, I was dissapointed.
Thank you so much for all your info..
Take Care,
April
Perhaps it wasn't the strontium but the inactive ingredients within it? Even capsule coatings can cause reactions. My doctor carries Pure Encapsulations - Strontium (citrate) - besides strontium it has 20 mg of Vit. C, for some reason, but the only other ingredient is a hypo-allergenic plant fiber vegetable capsule.
I have just started taking strontium but am concerned about any effect on my sole kidney. I cannot take a lot of drugs due to having just one kidney. Does anyone know if strontium is safe for someone with one kidney?
Hi Razz51,
I read Strontium can cause Renal failure.
I read it on the Doctors Bests, info on Strontium.
I would call the Co. that manufactors your Strontium, or talk to a Pharms., or Health food store that you bought your Strontium from about the side effects , and how to take Strontium.
I'm sure I have read other Posts on NOF about Strontium. You might want to do a search here also.
Take Care,
April
I just did a quick google and didn't find strontium "causing" renal failure, more like if one already had renal failure it might not be good to take, like those on dialysis. Like I said it was a quick google and skim nothing indepth.
razz51, google for strontium effecting kidneys and see what you come up with and report back here.
razz51,
People with severely decreased kidney function should not take strontium. Those with moderately decreased kidney function can take strontium if they are monitored by a doctor.
To determine one's kidney function, a laboratory test called a creatinine clearance needs to be done. Then, based on the results, your doctor can decide if it is safe for you to take strontium.
