I am taking strontium citrate for osteopenia and would like to hear from others who are also. Have any of you had bone density improve after taking this supplement.? I have!

Hi, yes, I'm taking it but have had no DEXA scan since beginning. But also take Fosamax, calcium citrate, and 2,000 IU of vit. D3, and magnesium....plus trying to eat more alkaline foods.

Actually, in Europe, this isn't the form of strontium used which has produced the bone results. I don't have my folder handy, but it's strontium ranelate---if I've spelled it correctly. But, since that isn't approved in the US, several of us just take the citrate form hoping it'll work like the ranelate form does....but it may not. My philosophy is to be proactive and try it since it's all we have here.

I feel great, work out alot...and, like an ostrich, am putting my head in the sand about having another DEXA. Like the "Bones of Contention" article shows: the DEXA scan may possibly be questionable anyway.

Why do you think strontium ranelate (Protelos) is not FDA approved in the USA? I think it's because SR is manufactured by a French company, (Servier) and if it were approved for use here it would compete for space in the market with drugs like fosamax, actonel, and others. Hence the USA drug manufacturers would lose money rather than make money. Too bad because from what I read SR has fewer side effects than the bisphosphonates.

I know the DEXA is not perfect, no test is, but I still encourage you to have a follow-up. Who knows, your scores may well be better than you think -:)

I agree a proactive strategy is best, and some say all strontium is alike, though this is mostly extrapolation.

PS: Hey, if you add one more 'l' to your user name you could be a comet!!

I am excited, Zeta, to hear that you have had improvement after using Strontium. I have been using Osteopeak, a product that I'm very happy with (www.osteopeak.com) along with Vitamin D (prescription dosage), and estrogen (wanting to go on something more natural) along with other natural supplements.... and had 19% increase this year!
Jill

Wow, Jillie, I'm so happy for you, 19% increase is impressive indeed!! Thanks so much for the tip, I will check out Osteopeak. Do you have osteopenia or osteoporosis? What number are you aiming for on D3? That is how high do you believe is an ideal level and do you get it monitored to make sure you don't get too much? Do you happen to know what the symptoms of too much D3 are? Let me know if you start taking strontium citrate.

My last DEXA showed improvement in hip from -3.5 to -2.6 after 7 months on strontium citrate. I didn't change anything else in my regimen.

Are you a babe in the woods? I'm 55 yrs old.

zeta

When I was first diagnosed, I had Osteoporosis big time. These last test results showed that I am in the "normal range"!!! I do not have any idea on the level of D3. The dr. checks it once a year, and just not long ago it was in whatever range she says is good...?!?!? Your improvement with Strontium is SUPER, too!!! That is way encouraging!
I'm a "babe in the woods".. JUST turned 46 last week.
Hugs,
Jill

Jill,
I would like to know about what this product contains. I went to the website and the type was very small and blurred and I was unable to read it. I would greatly appreciate it if you could elaborate how you were introduced to this supplement (was it a health professional, friend, etc?). I would be interested to know what it contains beyond the Vitamin D and Calcium. How long have you been taking this supplement? Thanks.

Hi Zeta,

I'm very interested in strontium citrate. I'd much prefer strontium renelate, but I have to go to Europe or Canada for that. I actually may do that after my MD at Columbia decides wether or not I do have HyperParaThyroid. Did your scores improve? How much do you take daily?

Artheart

Sonny ~ SO SORRY it has taken me this long to respond. After I didn't get to respond right away, then I knew I was going to have to go back and find your comment to respond to it in particular! Ugh.. the whoas and blessings of cyberspace, huh!?!?! Osteopeak - I've taken it fairly consistently for the last year and a half. The year before that, I took it INconsistently. I found out about it just in searching the web. I contacted them, and a lady sent me a most wonderful packet of information that I could "hold in my hands" and review. I take the Natural one so it only has the Osteopeak blend in it, not the calcium & Vit. D. I wanted to take other calcium and Vit. D. Plus the natural has more of the blend in it than the others do. The blend is: Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch & Eleutherococcus senticocus Max. This is what i found about this herb: stimulated the proliferation and activity of bone-forming osteoblasts while inhibiting generation and activity of bone-resorbing osteoclasts. In addition, it was clearly demonstrated that RGX attenuated the progress of bone loss in ovariectomy-
induced osteoporotic rats. Although the active substances have not yet been identified, it is strongly suggested that the RGX contains effective substances that have the potential to enhance the bone metabolism. The other ingredient is: Eleutherococcus senticosus Max. And this is what I found about this: improvement of stamina, the prolongation of life, the maintenance of health condition, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities, and the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, cancer and neuralgia.

Anyway, I hope that helps!
Bless you!
Jill

Hi Zeta and all,

Why hasn't the FDA approved strontium ranelate in the states yet? I too am skeptical that possibly the pharmaceutical lobby may be bogging down the process, but my endocrinologist said that the FDA approval process is much more extensive than standards used elsewhere in terms of ensuring the safety of drugs. Just one man's opinion.

Hi Jill,

Osteopeak sounds like a exciting new option. Do you know of any side effects? How long have you been taking it? Can you share the website where you order it from? Have you had a DEXA since taking it?

Thanks for your time.

Artheart

Anyone taking strontium should be certain to let their care provider know this. The strontium incorporates in the bone and appears on DXA to be increased bone density, but is really artifact. See: http://www.maleosteoporosis.org/maleosteo/1306_sr.htm. Thus over three years of taking strontium, there is over 11% apparent gain in bone density that doesn't really exist. If you are getting great results on DXA's since starting strontium, this may be a very large part of the apparent gain--and it would do nothing to help prevent fractures--which is why you would take an osteoporosis medication. The DXA machine can be adjusted to give correct results, but only if the technician knows you are taking strontium.

Jill,

I would suggest being skeptical of a 19% annual increase in BMD, it would border on the impossible since bone doesn't turn over that rapidly. For instance, I have had a case where the radiologist read the wrong information from my DXA showing an apparent huge decrease in BMD after several years of improvement. Some follow up with questions to the chief of the radiology department led to the discovery of the problem.

The best results I can remember seeing were about 12% one-year improvement and that was with Forteo. This medication stimulates bone formation rather than blocking its breakdown as most others do and has been shown to increase BMD three to four times what bisphosphonates can do in at least one study, and probably about ten or twenty times what calcium and/or vitamin D can do.

If Osteopeak could increase BMD by 19%/year it would be in the headlines of every paper in the country since no other approved osteoporosis medication comes even close to that capability. So, as I said, I would just be skeptical and take a look at everything to see if there isn't some other explanation for the apparent increased BMD.

Hi Artheart,

Yes after about 7 months on s citrate my hip score improved about one full point. I take 2 caps of Doctor's Best brand which should not be taken within 2 hours of eating calcium containing foods or taking cakcium sups since calcium interferes with the absorption of strontium. I did not change anything else in my regimine.

zeta

jerry,

thanks for the link, i will evaluate it . however, i don't think strontium citrate or other forms of strontium, eg, strontium ranelate (protelos) which has been extensively researched and is avail only in europe currently, produce artificial gain. it is however true that one's t scores need to be adjusted to yeild an accurate reading since strontium is heavier than calcium. this does not involve adjusting the machine rather the score. so provided the radiologist adjusts for this, any gain IMO should be considered real, not an "artifact." you can find instructions on the internet for making this adjustment if u google "strontium dexa scan adjustments."

I read the article above and found it very interesting. Were the authors speaking only of strontium ranelate or were they implicating any form of strontium? The article generated from NIH which I've always considered a pretty reputable source of medical research. Is the author's conclusion that strontium may improve bone density only a fraction of what an unadjusted DEXA registers or provides no benefit at all?

linny

Linny,

On the contrary, stronium ranelate (in Europe only, as we've said) has produced some fairly impressive data...from legitimate studies...which you can find being conducted in Europe (especially Germany alot of times). In reference to strontium CITRATE, few valid studies have been conducted at all, is my current understanding. I believe there is one that is indicating beneft...but no real "studies" on this form to date. If the NIH actually said no benefit for the ranelate form, then I would question this. I might also suggest to never really put your trust in any agency or source because so many are "in bed" with one or several pharmaceutical companies or doctors who believe a certain way, etc. I think we all have to actually look at the studies ourselves, I'm sorry to say. I value the NIH, however. Just would question it in this case if it said that.

Hi Zeta. I am 46 yrs old and just finished 2 years of Forteo injections. Could you please tell me what Strontium Citrate is and also RGX? I've never heard of either and after 2 yrs of Forteo, the FDA has no further studies past 2 years so my doctor has to figure out what to do next. Please let me know. Thanks so much, Veronica email is harmonica61@netzero.net
