strontium citrate side effects?

I have been taking 620 mg of strontium citrate at night for about 8 months now. I also seem to be retaining water which has resulted in weight gain, hair is thinning some and have increased aching in my bones. Just wondering if this could be related to the strontium? Has anyone else thought so?

My hair seems to be thinning also and for two days my shin in my leg hurt when I walk a lot haven't gained weight, but have read comments on this happening. Maybe the hair thing and shin thing are coincidence because my hair tends to thin, I use rogaine. Also the shin pain I seem to remember another time. I have been having weird things though last week the top side of my foot was paining a lot if I bumped it now it stopped. Hopefully these are not worrisome things, and the strontium is working for the bones...

I do not know how this list correlates to Strontium Citrate, but it probably is close and I found these side effects at Boots Web MD:

I have been taking 640 mg strontium citrate daily for 7 months with no side effects at all. Bones20

The list of things which can cause hair thinning or loss is endless. It is not unusual for hair to thin post menopause due to hormone changes. So I would imagine this is coincidental... but don't know for a fact. I have been taking strontiumR and have not gained weight, nor have I aching bones. Maybe you could ask your doctor to do some bloods to rule out other causes? All the best.

STRONTIUM RANELATE contains Aspertame (the renelate part, not the strontium). The FDA has listed 92 symptoms/side-effect of Aspertame.

Read this:

The problem may very well be the Ranelate not the strontium.

Daphne takes strontium Citrate.

Yes, I know its hard to figure out what may cause hair loss. But I did not experience it related to menopause, but after Prolia and Strontium Citrate. Since the Prolia injection was 9 months ago, I started wondering if it could be the Strontium Citrate.
The water retention and bloating and weight gain started right after the Prolia shot, but I also started the Strontium then.
I haven't found any info on side effects to Strontium citrate (not renetate). And appreciate any info out there if anyone has it.

I have had shin splint problems but had that problem before SC, because of activity I wear sexy calf sleeves everyday and it helps eliminate the shin splint pain.
I have been taking SC about 20 months, next DEXA January 2013, no significant hair loss, but I take biotin.

Hi Daphne,
I did raise the question of acid reflux and sore throat as a side effect of SC but I have not had any responses todate. I have not had any other effects as mentioned on Boots website especially hair thinning or muscle pain to be honest.
My next DEXA is not due before next May which is a long way to go but I hope I will persevere until then to see if any good results will be around this time.

Ive taken Sc for 14 months. No muscle pain or water retention issues. If anything my hair is a bit thicker. My finger and toe nails used to be flimsy and transparent. Now they are thick and opaque. Ive taken biotin for many years prior to taking Sc and that did help my nails somewhat, but nothing like how they are now since the Sc.

thanks for the tip on how to deal with shin splints Char42!

I have taken strontium citrate for 7 years. No side effects. And I am pretty sensitive--allergic to wheat, dairy, and all metals (i.e. ear wires) other than titanium and niobium.

No bad effects from me either and I have been taking Strontium since January this year. When I did have muscle weakness in August, it was from the statin I was taking. The doctor took me off and put me on another and all symptoms left. If this statin causes any I should know anytime as they hit about 6-8 weeks after starting.

Blessings!

In my last post I was responding to Char42. Many/most of the side affects mentioned could be due to the Aspertame in the Ranelate.

"I do not know how this list correlates to Strontium Citrate, but it probably is close and I found these side effects at Boots Web MD:" They do not correlate. You are comparing apples with oranges.

Hey Chicken,
I am not trying to compare as it is conjecture, as for myself I have had some limb muscle and bone pain, maybe the SC has made my shins more painful. That is subjective and how could anything really be proved without trials. All of us taking the SC are guinea pigs and I am willingly a SC guinea pig as the sides from the various prescriptions were far worse. SC does not have to list side effects and I would not want to take SR, because of the Aspartame.
There has been a few women on this site with some of the listed sides taking SC, go figure everyone is different. My Brother taking SC has muscle and bone pain, my Sister has had no pain and a increase in bone density after one year. Duh some of the sides correlate, lol

I started taken PROTOS (strontium ranelate) 5 years ago, stopped one year and again over three years ago restarted the treatment, I'd gain weight. I have hipotyroidism and also osteoporosis as a result of the medicine for my slow thyroid. I don't have other problemas besides the weight, but my bone mass had not increase and that makes me feel very sad. Lately I've notice that my hair is thinning. I would like to try strontium citrate, maybe it will help better than PROTOS

When I first began taking strontium citrate I would develop a bad headache about 15 hours after taking a 340 mg pill. I kept at it for a few weeks, experimenting with taking my dose at different times, trying a different brand, but eventually I gave it up for a few months.

Meanwhile, I increased my magnesium intake and began taking the ubiquinol form of CoQ10.

When I reintroduced strontium citrate - no more headache! So now I've been taking 680 mg per day since July with no side effects at all.

What are calf sleeves?

Lilypad, do I recall reading something about if your going to have surgery that you need to stop the strontium or the vitamin k.? I take a product called grow bone that has vitamin k 100 mg and am considering some cosmetic surgery, or if anyone else knows of this. I hate to go off the stuff...

Hey Aluma
I saw them on sport players, did some research and decided besides the shin splints they have some compression for better circulation.
Bought 3 pair at Amazon and wear them daily until bedtime, pictures and products in the Amazon site. I do not sell the stuff, wish I would have invented them.

I started SC on 9/14. I'm taking the half dose. For the last week my IBS has been kicking up. I'm assuming it could be the SC ( (considering the side effects of SR Char 42 noted) - or not. If the IBS doesn't settle soon, I'll stop the SC for a while. Yes, I know the difference between SR and SC; nevertheless.

Any thoughts?
