Spinal Arthritis

0 Recommendations

I have recently been diagnosed with severe arthritis in my spine with bone deterioration in the lumbar region.

Are there natural health products than can help, other than calcium supplement tablets?

ARTHRITIS IN SPINE; me too and I* will be along here listening. I take glucosomine / condroitin and msm for my arthritic joints and back and -- bone building supplements you know: absorable calcium, magnesium, vit D with k and strontium, yet to be added today. I had successful hip replacement locally but would like simpler and better way,

I have been told for years at every x-ray that I have arthritis in my spine but until this year I was not plagued with it. No doubt it is what the surgeon would fuse?

it appears, online, like the Cleveland wellness clinic has special method for abraising arthritic joints. having just found them online, I intend to write them about hip, shoulder joints and the spine .

i have heard of the clinics reputation for outstanding strides AND if I
am not mistaken that is where DR OZ of OPRAH SHOW practices. That is only 400 miles for me .to go there..

I am new to Inspire and am getting in the bone building discussions; nothing specific to the spine yet.

Thank you Bettyrenshaw. A recent Xray recently revealed this severe arthritis for me as well. Some days it hurts to reach up to replace the shower head.

The pharmacist has told me that after a month of glocasamine it there is no change, it is not working for me.

Thanks for the mention of Vit K and strontium. I will try to get some today.

I live in Canada so special clinics are not close by but I am seeing the doctor again today in hopes of getting some pain relief that does not affect the stomach.

Hi,
I have had degeneration of the spine at the thoracic level for twenty years. If I watch my posture, it is better and not aggravated. I take Tylenol or Ibuprofen when I need it but not often. I take Glucosamine for my knees and have for years. They help my knees. I never knew that they could cut pain of arthritis in the back though.

I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis of the femur head and severe osteopenia of the lower back. At least I already try to watch my posture(sometimes)....because of the the arthritis! I'll have to try better though. Like now I'm not supposed to bend over. That's tricky!!!

Good posture is a key in treating the spine!

Hi Carolyn0107

Posture! Of Course! Right now I am hunched over the desk typing.

When I was in Grade 1, we put on a play and I was Number Eight because I stood up Straight. I think things have gone downhill since then.

Thanks. I will pay more attention!

Speaking of good posture.. i just purchased a book .. very reasonable price called Walk Tall by Sara Meeks which is an exercise program for Osteoporosis.... the exercises are safe even if you have severe discomfort. Sara talks about good body alighnment and posture... thought this might help!! I am going to phyical therapist re my posture but the book helped me more..

Posture!
I'm glad I could be of help batikbaby!

Batikbaby,

Have you gotten a DXA scan to measure your bone density? I assume your doc would have done that due to seeing bone deterioration?

I suggest when you take your strontium citrate, you do it at a different time than when you take your calcium. Also, it should be taken on an empty stomach. A dosage of 680 mg seems to be the recommended amount.

Calcium citrate is the best type of calcium, due to being most easily absorbed. If you don't find the strontium locally, it's available on-line. I use Dr's Best brand and it's not expensive.

For your posture, if you get your doc to send you to physical therapy, they can show you exercises for posture and strengthening, as well as to improve balance. Also, you'll need to know what type of movement and exercise to avoid. Good luck to you.

Tom

Thank you Tom. I do not believe the calcium I am taking is calcium citrate.

Tomorrow I will go to the pharmacy and see if I can obtain it easily. I live in Canada. Otherwise, at your suggestion, I will order it on-line.

I am grateful for your reply.

Alli ~

What do you consider reasonably priced? Amazon has used copies of Walk Tall starting at $195.53 for a spiral bound or $79.99 for a paperback. I can't afford that and my library doesn't have it.

Hi Susan Rae
Walk Tall I purchased through Amazon for $10 or $12 dollars

Batikbaby you won't find strontium at pharmacy in Canada you will have to go online. If u have private messaging enabled I can direct you. let me know

Unfortunately they must be sold out of the $10-12 edition.

You don't mean "Stand Tall" do you? It has a different primary author, but Sara Meeks has 2 chapters of exercises in it.

I would love to have this book for $10-12! $20?

Wow Susan thats quiet a difference in cost.
A new edition coming out in 2010 wondering is that the reason?? Just glad i purchased it when i did.
I have it in front of me now called Walk Tall by Sara Meeks. Sara did an excellent job can't wait to purchase the new one next year.

Alli ~ Yes, I want this book, too. Sara's posts are always informative and interesting, and well written, too. I even checked ebay, and they're more than Amazon. Hopefully the new edition won't be as expensive. I got a list of physical therapists who have had her training, but have yet to figure out how to use my insurance, or even if they're approved providers. One of them had a level 3 rating, meaning they've taken 3 courses from Sara (I think).

I might get the Stand Tall book. It's got two chapters of exercises by Sara. I need something with pictures (or drawings).

A recent x-ray showed I have arthritis of the neck. It's been bugging me for several months. Maybe some of these exercises would help.

Hi batikbaby:
Something to keep in mind is that the amount of joint degeneration does not correlate well with the level of pain. I have seen people with terrible joint degeneration on Xray and no pain. I think you will find four things very helpful for your pain.

1. Full body stretching daily after a 10 minute warm-up. Flexibility helps increase the joint spaces making the joints less susceptible to irritation and pain.
2. Drink lots of plain old water. Water helps flush and detoxify the body and lubricates the joint spaces reducing pain and inflammation levels.
3. Practice good posture as motioned above to stop the joint irritation and pain.
4. Reduce stress through visualization and relaxation activities. Higher stress levels increase pain and inflammation levels.
