If a 40 something year old male has secondary osteoporosis, and the secondary reason is addressed such as a thyroid? Can they restore their bone health without drugs?

on a forum from US they talked about prunes and melatonin both being very good.

Thank you,

I will be reading up on nutrition. I was eating a mostly raw fruits and vegetables diet for six months prior to experiencing painful joints.

Curt: I'm not sure, but there is some indication that correcting parathyroid problems leads to increased BMD. Particularly if one addresses diet, exercise, and Vitamin D levels.

Curt, I had extremely painful joints and that was caused by low vitamin D. And I agree with Faye. I've read studies both on parathyroid and thyroid where once the problem was corrected, bone mass was restored.

Here's a quote for you:
"These observations suggest: (1) in premenopausal women, bone loss associated with thyrotoxicosis due to Graves' disease is present but is fully restored when remission is reached after subtotal thyroidectomy; (2) subclinical hypothyroidism after subtotal thyroidectomy may result in higher BMD than that of controls."

Here's a link to a study on the parathyroid/BMD recovery:

Granted you're a GUY, and I don't know if you have Graves, but that should offer you some hope. Don't know how rapid a process that is.

Best,
Raye
