Reclast Infusion

1 Recommendation

Good Evening: I am new to the group. I was diagnosed with osteopenia probably 6 years ago. I did not respond to Activa or Boniva, but I frequently forgot to take them. About 2 years ago I moved up to osteoporosis with a high risk of a hip fracture. I switched to Fosamax, but once again, I forget to take it. I do try to increase my calcium and Vit D. ( I have a vit. D deficiency). My MD wanted me to start on Forteo, but after researching it, I decided against that. I am now awaiting my healthplans approval for a Reclast Infusion. They did approve it, but for the wrong dose and frequency so it is now back under review. Anyway I am concerned about the side effects, such as fever and bone pain. I am just starting a new job and concerned about missing work. Has anyone undergone this treatment and if so, what were your side effects?

Thank you

I had the Reclast infusion last week after two years on Forteo. Forteo took me from full blown Osteoporosis to Osteopenia! Hopefully Reclast will maintain that increase! I have had no side effects. Not one!! I almost didn't take it because of all the side effects that have been posted. Aches, headaches, etc. I would encourage you to go in with a positive attitude. We have to avoid Osteoporosis!! My mother has had 10 compressed fractures and one broken femur so far! Good Luck!

I'm still working on the insurance issue too.

However, I have come across a Novartis Reclast Injection Reimbursement Hotline so call them and maybe they can help. The # is 1800 833 0166. Keep us informed.

MIsnowflake and we have the snow. 8" of heavy wet stuff. It's glorious looking out :-)

It took me 3 months for the insurance approval and even now they approved it for 1mg every 6 months which is not the FDA approved dosage and frequency for osteoporosis. For osteo, it is 5mg once a year. Anyway I am moving ahead with it and hoping they will cover it. They did send a second approval letter saying the dose didn't matter, but my doctor suspects they will try to only pay for 1mg. Anyway, apparently oncologist have an easier time getting it paid for, so this Friday I am going to an oncologist for the infusion. I am worried about the side effects as I can't find anyone who has undergone this type of tx. I will let you know how it goes.

Hi Joanelai

I saw a rheumatologist who specializes in Osteoporosis for the first time this week. He suggested that I stop Boniva and start injections of Forteo once a day for a year. I am checking on Insurance benefits also. His second choice was the Reclast I.V. but I have run into a snag with my insurance not knowing what it is.

He also ordered the 25-Hydroxy Vit D lab test along with numerous others. I am curious to see how the Vit D comes out as I've never had that tested.

Keep us informed what you go with and I wish you the best.
