Cancer Confusion Forteo Coumadin Fosamax Reclast Wellbutrin Osteopenia Chemotherapy Menopause Pain Osteoporosis Folic acid Stress
I underwent Reclast infusion about a month ago. Before I agreed to it, I did research the drug. I did not see any mention of hair loss. I just rechecked and still don't see it listed even in the list of side effects that less than 2% suffered. I wonder if maybe because oncologist used the drug for cancer patients, that maybe why some think it might cause hair loss. But its not a chemotherapy drug. Personally, my hair is intact.

Hi Dawnbath,
Isn't Reclast the infusion that is only given once a year? Has it already been approved by the FDA?
Maybe I'm confusing it with another drug. Please let me know.
Thanks, Linda
Yes it is a once a year infusion. It was FDA approved in September.

I had my first re-clast infusion on 3-4-09 and had severe side effects. Most of the side effects listed, I had. I have also in the past month experienced servious/extreme hair loss. This is VERY stange since all of my life ( I am 53) my stylists comment about how much hair I have. Not the case any longer since this infusion. The side effects last 2-3 weeks and I had a very bad reaction. I sure hope this drug is all its states that it is. I have experienced alot of pain and stress due to this drug and these side effects and sure hope it proves to be worth it! I will seriously think twice before I have next year.
The same sentiment here!!! I will seriously think twice next year about my second infusion. I still have lots of teeth/jaw pain since Feb 17, 2009......My mouth just doesn't feel normal.
I have not read anything about hair loss with Reclast, but it could be a side effect. Hair loss is a side effect of many medications, including Coumadin, I take the Vitamin Biotin and have for many years. Now I take double dose Biotin to prevent Coumadin hair loss and I have maintained my mop.
You can buy it in most drug stores; I buy my Biotin at Puritan.
Yes, I am experiencing a great deal of hair loss and I can't think of any reason for it except that I had reclast on Nov. 3 I plan to try the Biotin and see what happens. It's very frustrating to try to find out just what side effects to expect. I dont' think anyone really knows at this point but I will not ever take another reclast injection.
WebMD does list hair loss as a problem with this drug

I received a reclast infusion last November. I concur with the others concerning hair loss which is pretty spectacular. I am also taking coumadine, so I guess both of it contribute to hairloss. It is rather demoralizing but one has to weigh the pros and cons. I shall take the advice of trying Biotin, I am rather desperate to try what ever.

I just checked with a interaction checker and there are no interactions with Reclast and Biotin. http://www.drugs.com/drug_interactions.php
I take Biotin 1500mg, 500mg 3 times a day, start out slowly and build up your intake. Also it does not interact with Coumadin. Be gentle shampooing and drying your hair, omit a daily shampoo.
Char 42; Thank you for your advice and I shall try to find Biotin and hope it is available in Europe.
Shampoing is a necessity but I have since realized it is better to do it only twice week, not to speak of daily shampoing. As I am somebody who likes a nice hairdlo, I go to the hairdresser once a weeK. A day later, nobody will notice I have been at all. But I keep on trying. Thanks for your advice.

I did a drug study using Forteo in conjunction with Reclast in 2008. My first infusion of Reclast had me sick as a dog with flu symptoms for 5 days. After that, I was fine. I went from Stage 4 osteoporosis to osteopenia. Great results! I said I would do it again. I just had my second infusion with no flu symptoms - now I am losing my hair! Is it from Reclast, Wellbutrin, or the stress of my son's upcoming wedding? When will it stop? I hope I don't look like a poster child for Rogaine as I walk down the aisle. I started taking Biotrin, stopped the Wellbutrin (just in case it was the culprit - now I will be completely wacky at the wedding) and am hoping for the best. I always had "Farrah Fawsett hair." Boy, getting old stinks!
Could you relate what your numbers were? Stage 4, don't know what that means. You are the first person to post their results. And where, spine, hip, etc? Thank you so much, trying to make a decision.
Anyone else out there had the infusion?
Looking for results, good or bad, just to know how reclast is working to increase bone density and quality of life.
Has anyone out there had the Reclast i.v. and happen to be steroid dependent asthmatic?
The results of my hip scans were 4.5 and my lower spine were 4.0. I had early menopause starting at age 42. Stupid me - I didn't know, nor did any one tell me, to get a bone scan. My first one was at age 52 after the pain in my hips became very worrisome. I have always been in great health and take care of myself with annual check-ups ect. Some how, the mention of a bone scan fell through the cracks Now both hips and spine are osteopenia after a year of Forteo shots once a day, coupled with the once a year dose of Reclast. That's why I didn't hesitate to take the Reclast again - I figured 4 days of flu symptoms was a small trade off. Now with my hair dropping out, vanity has set in. If it stops soon, I would still do the Reclast next year. Otherwise, I will explore other options.
I am starting to panic. I know I shouldn't be so vain, but does any one know when the hair loss stops????? I started Biotin.
I received my first infusion of Reclast in June of 08.My symptoms were minor and my results were mediocre. I did notice some hair loss and a change in the texture of my hair. Once full and curly, it became as fine as silk and completely straight. I also color my hair and it is now almost completely gray. My hairdresser and I attributed the change to age. I never even thought of Reclast.
I had the infusion again in June of 09. I had flu like symptoms, excessive bleeding from my gums and the hair loss dramatically acclerated.
Here is my question: How long does the hair loss continue? Will it eventually grow back if the Reclast is not repeated? Or is the damage permanent?
What kind of doctor should I see to try to correct the problem: the rheumatologist who prescribed the Reclast? A Dermatologist?
I plan to have a reclast infusion in about a week. I am on coumadin, will it have any effect on my PT level?
Hello. I am new here and going through the same struggles of fear and confusion over my osteoporosis diagnoses at age 58 (-3.4 in spine). I eagerly started fosamax right away and was on it only for 1 month because my hair was falling out. Is Reclast also a bisphos?
