Reclast

I am scheduled my first Reclast infusion next Tuesday,August 26. I must admit that I am a bit nervous about it, but I'm optimistic about the resulting increase in bone density. I have been taking liquid Fosamax plus calcium and vitamin D for the past four years and have had no fractures since starting that regimen. Prior to that time I sustained 3 rib fractures, one fracture of a foot bone, and several compression fractures of the spine. My last bone density test indicated some bone loss of the hip, so my doctor strongly recommended Reclast, saying that I was an excellent candidate for this treatment. I'm hoping she is right. Although I've admitted feeling nervous, I'm also excited at the prospect of no more weekly Fosamax! Good luck to all who are about to have their infusion, and to those who have already received theirs!

Dear Posy
Good luck with your infusion I had mine 9 months ago I also take calcium and vit D , do not forget exercising for me walking and swimming. I feel better and hope you do too. Best of luck to you and all the group. magi

Hi Posy, nervous is normal when we try something different and new. Think good thoughts. We're so fortunate to live in at time where we have so many options. I'll be thinking of you next Tuesday. Please let the community know how you do with the Reclast. Sandi

Dear Posy, I also was weary to have the Reclast done, especially since I was the first to have it done in my town of Enid, Ok. I had it done April 16 and so far I have not had any problems. But Be Sure to drink lots of water before you have the procedure and afterwards. That way you have less problems getting the flu like symptoms. You may have joint pains for the first few days which will go away. Take some acetaminophen for the pain and fever if needed.
Good Luck,
Also a Sandi S.

Hi Posy and others,
I have my first Zometa infusion on the 26th as well. I'm nervous too. Are Zometa and Reclast the same? I was not told to drink the water before and after.
I have not had any fractures. My first Dexa a couple of weeks ago revealed -2.2 on the spine and -2.5 on the hip. I hope all goes well for you Posy! CAJ

I am now trying to get Reclast authorization from HMO and was wondering what people that have already taken it have to say about the experience and reaction if any. If you get reaction is it right away or days or weeks later? Thanks Vikki

Vikkid, I had Reclast infusion a month ago and had no adverse side effects. Like everyone says, drink lots of water before and after. The pain I had in my back between my shoulder blades is gone now. Let us know what you decide to do.

Dear Caj, I have read and been told that you really need to drink as much water before and after the Reclast so that it doesn't hurt your kidneys. Also take 2 Tylenol after you get home so that you won't have the flu like symptoms. It worked for me with no illness what so ever. I hope you did not get sick from the procedure. Let us know.

Hi to everyone,
I had my first infusion of Reclast (same as Zometa) on Aug 26th. I woke with a headache the morning I had to go in, so I took 400MG of Ibuprofen. I was given a bag and a third of saline before the actual medicine. I took your advice and drank water before and during the procedure. I was there about an hour and a half. I have no side effects at all. I'm now in physical therapy, walking 45 mins a day (weather permitting). Oh and 1,665 mg Calcium + D. I'm glad its done for a year and out of the way. I hope my Dexa scan a year from now shows improvement so we don't have to look at other options. Thanks Ladies!/CAJ

Hi to everyone,

I just got diagnosed with osteporosis. Had osteopenia for a least nine years. Now my doctor started me on Actonel, monthly. I took the First pill yesterday and have felt horrible since. Very tired. Achy. Headache. Hard to describe overall bad feeling.
Not really any problems though with gastrointestinal issues. Personally, I hate taking prescription meds.
Wish this could just be resolved with exercise, diet and calcium supplements. Any body know a good holisitic health consultant on this???

CAJ---Are you sure you understood correctly? Everybody else seems to have been instructed to hydrate very well before the infusion and we've noticed that when we do that we get less of the famous "flu-like syndrome".

Rosaflor, I think I understand correctly. No doctor or nurse told me to drink water ahead of time. I did because of what I read here. Also when I arrived at the hosptial, they hydrated me with saline while I was waiting for the reclast to arrive from the pharmacy. I had zero side affects from the reclast infusion. The headache I woke with was before the infusion. I'm sure stress related, thats why I had taken the ibuprofen. I hope I clarified or am I missing your point? CAJ

I am glad your infusion went well. I had understood you to say that you were counseled NOT to drink water. I should have read more carefully. The difference lies between your "I was not told to drink water" eg the nurse didn't think of saying it, and my incorrectly perceived "I was told not to drink water" eg stay dry. (Reminds me of my long-ago English teaching days, when students used to giggle over the difference between "I am an outDOOR lover" an "I am an outdoor lover".) It's all in the details...stay well.

Hehehe. You stay well too Rosaflor!

HI,
I writing to tell you that I have taken Aclasta twice, the first infusion was in June 07 and second was in June 08.
I felt very bad with the first one but the last one was too different I just felt a few symptoms.
I hope feel better than now

Don;t forget you have to load up on calcium with D for a an amount of time after the infusion. If you don't the body will try to find it from other places ie: the heart. There have been some studies that have shown abnormal heart enzymes after, this happened to my mother. Good Luck

Hi NancyO, Have you heard of strontium citrate for osteoporosis? I also hate taking prescription drugs but tried Fosamax and felt awful with all the symptoms you described for your first dose of Actonel plus a few more even worse symptoms that developed after a few months.

I now take 680 mg strontium citrate. I also take calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and other supplements. I try to eat a nutritious diet and I walk and do floor exercises for my back daily.

So, yes, a holistic approach with exercise, diet, and supplements is a viable alternative for those with osteoporosis who prefer this method. Strontium increases bone formation and decreases bone breakdown, leading to an increase in bone density and a reduced incidence of fractures due to osteoporosis. I have a non-commercial blog with information about strontium. Please visit at http://strontiumforbones.blogspot.com/.

Hi posy & CAJ
I have an appt. to see my Dr. in Oct. I'm going to ask him about the Reclast infusion. Sounds like it would be a lot more convenient than taking weekly fosamax!

Hi everyone. My elderly mom of 79 years old is about to have her first shot of Reclast this coming Monday for Osteoporosis. Her bones are pretty bad especially in her hip area. I admit I am a bit nervous after doing a Google search and reading some bad reactions people have had in addition to reading that drug companies exaggerate their findings and diminish the side effects.

I am glad to find this forum and read your personal experiences. I would like to hear more whether good or bad and if you can also let me know of other links where I can read about personal experiences with Reclast other than the drug company's website.

Someone said that calcium and vitamin D must be taken. Is this right after the Reclast infusion only or every day?

I would appreciate hearing from others who have had Reclast and any suggestions. I am a concerned daughter and I just want to ensure Mom makes a good decision.

That Calcium with D-3 is every day and alot of it. Don't forget the manganese also, to help with absorbtion./CAJ
