REALLY FEELING DESPERATE ABOUT MY BONE LOSS

0 Recommendations

I have a malabsorption problem which I am still being investigated for. I am gluten intolerant and also have candida in my gut which all hinder absorption. I have been ill for over a year but over the past couple of months my whole skeleton has gone so much smaller. I have scoliosis which has been made worse by osteopenia. My wrists are painfully thin and my teeth have all moved. I am 43 years old and
pre-menopausal and have been prescribed Calichew, which I cannot tolerate. I am awaiting the result of a parathyroid test. Could you advise me on who I should be referred to and which treatment I could take. I am exercising but the bone loss seems to be really progressing fast. Thank you so much for any advice you can give me.

Hi! I'm sorry to read about all your medical issues - you must feel overwhelmed. Although I'm not familiar with the things you listed (except for bone loss), I did want to respond and let you know you're not alone! Everyone here has felt totally overwhelmed at one point or another, and we can all commiserate with you. We are a good group here, and I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I have will answer with some suggestions. No one will be able to give you "advice", but they will share their stories and try to help. I assume you are being treated by doctors who specialize in digestive problems. Please let us know how you are doing! Hoping others will write to you with some ideas!

Hi Janmaz,

So sorry your not well.
Are you seeing a GI Dr., Gastroentestal Dr.(sp?) also an Endroconologist Dr..
Not sure if that would help, but I would give that a try!!

There are some people in the Health field that are not Drs. that have helped my son. He also has Gluten allergies etc.

I didn't think that Osteopinia could be that painful!
I have osteoporosis, which I thought was not painful, unless you compress a virtibra or break a bone. My wrist/fingers etc. are VERY thin. I started having allot of pain in my wrist, and went to arthritis Dr. who Xrayed them, I do have Arthritis in my wrist, neck etc. He gave me those black wrist bands that velcro over. They hold my wrist in place. they do seem to help if i'm lifting light weights etc. But I do not want to wear them all the time , like I'm suppose too.!

What is Calichew?
I started taking for my bones, Strontium citrate, that a few people here take with good results.
I took the one monthly Boniva one time, it made me sick. I never took it again, or anyother Meds my Dr. wanted me to take.
I'm hopeing Strontium, Vit D, calcium, mag etc. exerciseing, eating well, will improve my bones.
Although I do not have some of your health problems.

I hope you find out what is going on with your body, and your feeling Much Better.
Take care,
April

you should consider hormones. What does your doctor say about that?

Thanks for all your replies. You are all so helpful on this site. I am being investigated for gut problems but I need to get the gut to heal to absorb nutrients better. I am on a strict diet and have to avoid gluten, wheat, dairy products, yeast or sugar.

I have had my hormones checked and were okay but my body is definitely pre-menopausal. My bone loss is visible in that my waist has gone absolutely tiny and my wrists and forearms are really thin. Enough my moans and groans and thank you all.

I was wondering if you have tried a probiotic to help build up the good bacteria in your gut? Just a thought as I have found this helpful.

As you have found out, celiac disease presents several health problems, including osteoporosis. The proper diet can be of great help and you'll get used to it. This life-long autoimmune disease is being increasingly identifies in those suffering from various symptoms -- headaches and depression, persistent itching, along with bellyaches and indigestion. Proper diagnosis and management is KEY. Check reliable information on the internet. I trust your doctor has already discussed this with you and given you brochures and such. Oftentimes, doctors can give too much information at first and it is hard to take it all in. My son-in-law was diagnosed a couple years ago and only had the dermatitis symptoms, but there was intestinal damage -- just no symptoms. He is now doing well -- the whole family eats gluten-free now. My daughter says it is easier and less chance of a mix-up.

Janmaz - Though I don't have all the specific conditions that you listed, I definitely feel your anguish, desperation and fear...I'm on the same page. I don't have any remedies to recommend as I'm searching for help just like you, and I feel sure you're doing all you can to take care of yourself. You will be added to my prayer list today - that I promise. Don't give up. And keep asking for help.

Hi Jan,

I have Celiac Disease and Osteoporosis as a result of that (malabsorption). There is a Celiac Panel set of blood tests that you can have done. If you haven't seen a GI dr, please try to get an appt. He/she may also want to do an endoscopy for confirmation. You should be diagnosed before starting the gluten free diet. Otherwise, you may start to heal your gut, making later diagnosis difficult.

IF CD is your major problem, perfecting the gf diet should eventually heal your small intestine and allow you to absorb calcium supplements. I say perfecting, because the diet has a learning curve. There is a very good forum on Delphi for support of CD. Good luck,

Tom

I have had an endoscopy which showed some of my villi were misshapen. The coeliac blood test though was negative. I have been gluten free for a long time but still no improvement with my symptoms. I believe I have non-coeliac gluten intolerance. I cannot seem to find out what is causing the malabsorption. Seeing Gastroentoerologist next week. Whether it is due to bacteria and fungus. I am trying my hardest to try and heal my gut and hopefully will absorb better. Thanks for your advice.
