Tylenol Surgery Acid reflux Boniva Aspirin Back pain Fever Reclast Actonel Pain Osteoporosis
Yes, I took it February 5, 2008...No problems during or immediately after infusion- OK until about 3 am when I woke with chills and fever (102)..this lasted about 12 hours- then I was just very fatiqued for maybe another day. After that I was fine and have had nothing since. I did not know about hydrating prior to the infusion.
My doctor (rheumatologist) said I have been his only patient with these side effects.
Dear huntc1, Many thanks for your message! Marijim Thoene
Flu like symptoms are very common with this medication. Read the posts on here. Many have those symtoms and many have even worse. I did a lot of research when it was recommended to me. I decided not to get it. My gyno also recommended that I did not as it is too new!
Dear Toot, Thank you for your reply. At the last minute I decided not to try it because an endocrinologist said he knew of one patient reacting to it with excruciating bone pain that last beyond a year. That was a deal breaker for me. Marijim Thoene

Your are welcome. Some people dont' like my opinions, but I am only telling what I have read and researched myself. My Gyno recommended that I do not take it. Like he said if you have a reaction to the pill you can always stop it. As far as your rheumatoligist saying they only had one patient with that side effect? I do not believe that. My Rheumatologist told me that many people have those symptoms after. They usually last 1-3 days. We are the ones that have to live with these side effects and only we can decide if we really want to. Good luck to you! You know I look at it this way, it is too new and maybe after it is out awhile we will know more and have more statistics. Take Care!
I have the package insert at hand. Out of 3862 patients receiving the drug when it was studied, 17.9% had some fever and about one-third had either muscle or joint achiness for several days following the first injection (the incidence drops dramatically after the second and third injection). I myself did not have fever or "flu-like syndrome" although I had some bone pain in my low back and legs on Day II. I have heard (don't know whether this is scientific) that being well-hydrated helps not get the reaction so I drank gallons before and during the infusion starting a day in advance. Just arrange your life in advance so you can take it easy for a couple of days. Sometimes there is a price to pay for a remedy: my brother-in-law got a new drug two weeks ago that stopped him from going blind---vision improved from 20/200 to 20/70 after the first injection---but the stuff has to be injected directly into the eyeball. Sounds horrible. But look at the benefit.
I had the injection a few days ago. Yesterday I felt awful. Terrible headache, drawing in legs, muscle aches.
I took my first Reclast infusion last July. I was well hydrated and was given Tylenol and juice by the infusion nurse. I did not have any side effects. I will have dexa scan March 30 and am hoping to see some positive results. I will let you know...... After watching my mother-in-law shrink 6 inches, the problems she encountered with the "crowding of her body organs", the pain caused by her "S" shaped spine, .......I was willing to take the Reclast infusion since I was unable to tolerate medicine by mouth due to formation of ulcers in my esophagus.
After very successful outcomes with 1) Aredia Infusions (4 hrs. each quarter and 2) Boniva Injections (30 second / 30 minute wait /quarterly .... I was told by my very knowledgable treating Physician that I was an excellent candidate for Reclast.
I initially agreed but at the last second changed my mind and with the aid of my Infusion Nurse---- opt out and returned to Boniva Injections!
Why ....... while this drug is convenient and just recently approved by the FDA for once a year infusions. However .... given my own medical history of being very sensitive to medications -- particularly those taken orally (such as experiencing severe bone pain after taking Oral Actonel ) and as well having a known sensitivity to Aspirin.... the risks were too great. The patient must take charge here !
ViHay, am I understanding correctly, the Actonel gave you bone pain, but the injections of Boniva do not? Aren't they both kind of similar, biophosphate... whatever? ~ JJ
Yes - but the route appears to be the key here. I have side effects with this class of drugs if I take them .....
"by month" or orally ; I do not if they are injected/ infused directly into my vein. Yale/ New Haven Environmentally Health group has come to this same conclusion. As far as the mechanism involved---- still hypothetical.
I had a Reclast infusion 2 weeks ago. Within 24 hours I had severe muscle and joint pain. I figured it would go away in a couple of days. It has not let up since. I'm having to double my pain medication and that isn't touching it. I'm having a hard time even getting out of bed. Very concerned.
I received my first dose of Reclast last year (March) and am scheduled for my second infusion tomorrow. I had severe myalgia (sore muscles) for about a week with Reclast and that is a typical reaction by the way. I had some burning and soreness at the infusion site, for a day or two, again normal reaction. I did however, receive relief of bone pain 3 weeks after the infusion that lasted probably about 7 months which was totally worth the week of discomfort right after the infusion. I started with bone pain in October of last year and it has escalated to the point of being beyond uncomfortable the past 2 months and the worst this past month. Right back to where I was before the first infusion, so for me, I did not get relief for a year. My physician said that a certain amount of medication is absorbed within so many days of the infusion then the rest is disposed of by the body, so not all is used. He also stated that it is quite normal for the first two to three infusions to not last a year, especially with my body. I build a resistance to medications, hence why I’m now trying Reclast because all the other medications for Osteoporosis have failed. I will get a Dexa scan next year (usually done 2 years after taking Reclast) to see if it has even been beneficial. I am hoping that tomorrow’s infusion will bring some relief to this severe bone pain that I have been having. I think you should give Reclast a try. Hopefully my information has helped answer your question. I’m wishing you the very best!
Take care,
Cynthia
I have taking Reclast in nov. had no side effect no flu
but now my Jaw hurt not painfull, was wonder if any one else had Jaw hurting, it just ach & drive me nuts
I had the Reclast infusion on Feb 17, 2009 and had some minor aches and pains. What has bothered me alot has been my teeth/jaw pain. Even to this day my jaw hurts when I yawn. Also, it seems that I grew a small amount of bone above my gum line. The Endocrine doctor said that it looked ok to him. I even called Novartis but they were of no help. The lady was reading to me what was on the instruction booklet given to me. I don't know if I will get another infusion in Feb, as it depends how well my dexa looks. I will definately go and get a second opinion with the dentist before I proceed.
iola, I had reclast last March, I was do another one this March, but I was having jaw and mouth pain so I went to my Oral Surgeon to be checked. I wanted his opinion, well he gave it. I had implants done 12 years ago, and if I had checked out the info. like I should have, I would not have had reclast. He said he had 5 patients with problems I gather and gave me info. as to what could happen if I have to have any more work done in my mouth, it really bothers me because my mouth can always need something done with implants.
I am osteoporic. I will not get another reclast infusion.
He also told me this drug is in your body 11 years.
Dot1: Did you have significant gains with the Reclast? I won't know until next year whether or not it worked but the endo said if I didn't get the Reclast again, any gains would be lost. It makes me wonder, at what cost (my teeth)? I too will seek a oral surgeon to make sure the Reclast hasn't affected my whole mouth because after the infusion my teeth/jaw just don't feel normal. I also have a porcelain crown on the top of my mouth and it has become quite bothersome. This crown has never even been an issue until the Reclast (go figure)......
Duchess3, Yes I did get 6/10th they said, but I don't
want the outcome of what can happen to my mouth.
My oral surgeon is very reputable and told me to take the information sheet he gave me to the Dr. This is a sheet that you sign for him if you have any dental surgery. I am having back pain now so bad, I had an Epidural yesterday, I can't help but wonder at times if this is related to Reclast. I have just gotten worse this year but, (I don't know).
Dot1: I never knew the infusion would stay in the body for 11 years, I thought only for 1 year. I have a porcelain crown and it has been very bothersome since the infusion. I have had it for about 20 years and never gave me a problem but now I feel lots of pain ever since the Reclast. I hope I didn't make a mistake with this one. The doctor sort of scared me about the Osteoporosis, since I am only 45 but have the bones of a 65-70 year old but I need my teeth to be able to eat in life. I wasn't able to take a oral pill because I have had a Nissen fundoplication for acid reflux, so a pill was out of the question.
I had my first infusion in October 2008. No problems following the infusion. My last dexascan improved in every area. Example: Spine T-score in 2008 -2.6 and Spine T-score in 2007 -3.1. I consider that a wonderful improvement. I am so thankful.
