re reponse to Suza re safe yoga

Hi Suza, Thanks for the informative postings about osteoporosis and yoga. I am really getting a lot out of your postings.

I've been afraid to try yoga because the teachers around here (DC) don't seem to know much about osteoporosis and what we should and should not do. I had a negative experience with a yoga teacher and a trainer at my gym. I find many ''professionals'' say they know about osteoporosis when they really don't. You soon find out that they don't however, generally after getting injured in my case. My experiences have been they just want your business/want you in class.

Is there a site or could one be stared on this board that lists physical therapists, yoga instructors, trainers who truly are trained and knowledgable (about osteoporosis? (not sure how this would be determined or guaranteed). I know I would use such a site.
Thanks.

Please be patient as there have been discussions about a Topic specific for Exercise. The community is still fairly new as the moderators note what will benefit the community members. Suza & I are in touch as I hope within her posts, some of the issues and concerns I have found over the past many years as a Yoga student will be addressed specific to osteoporosis/osteopenia. Thanks for the suggestion. Sandi (sdivas - Volunteer Moderator)

The answer is "YES!" The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) lists teachers, therapists, doctors and other practitioners who use yoga in their practices. Their web site is http://.www.iayt.org.

I will answer this question (and all other questions) in more detail this morning on my blog. I will also be posting stories about my students with osteoporosis who are practicing safe yoga with the help of yoga props.

My book, "The New Yoga for Healthy Aging, " has an extensive Appendix with resources on yoga and osteoporosis. I will be posting some of the resoures from the section on "Finding a Teacher in Your Area."

Best wishes,
Suza

Hello Barbara:
Whatever exercise form you choose, you should seek out a physical therapist, exercise specialist, Yoga teacher, Pilates teacher etc who has had some special training in SAFE movement for persons with osteoporosis. Depending upon your exact condition, forward bending, side bending and rotation of the spine are either contra-indicated or to be performed with extreme caution. Just because a person has a book on osteoporosis exercise or says they work with osteoporosis doesn't guarantee that you will be safe. Ask questions and get answers.
As a physical therapist, I have worked with many people injured in classes they attended with the intent of getting stronger and ended up getting injured, sometimes severely.
