Osteoporosis of the feet

I recently went to the podiatrist with foot pain when I walked barefoot on hard surfaces. One quick look at my x-rays and he diagnosed osteoporosis of the feet. The DEXA confirmed it is also in my lumbar spine. Hip is osteopenia. I haven't read of anyone having it in the feet. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. Oh, I am 62, 5ft 2in and weigh 112. Was on Fosomax for 7 yrs. The doc told me to go to my OBGYN. She wants me on Fosomax still. I don't think so!

I'm pretty sure I've read where others on this site have talked about having fractured bones in their feet. Seems like some of the ladies who are runners have done so.

When you think about it, the metatarsals are pretty small bones. It's not impossible. Did your doctor run any tests to rule out secondary causes for your osteoporosis? That's really important before you consider other drugs, that should be the first step. Dr. Susan E. Brown has a list of the 13 diagnostic tests you should have performed.

Here on the NOF site, perhaps type in the words "foot fracture" or "fractured foot" and see what comes up.

The scans look at your hips and spine for diagnostic purposes. If your bones are weak, it means that they are weak all over your body. I have broken three bones in my feet just by standing from the sofa at the age of 44.

The Specialists could also tell from my scans and the crumbling of the bones that I had Ostoporosis ( but I already new that. The bones in my feet will not heal I need to wait to the ligament grows and grabs the bones. Recovery has been slow and the other problem is that I cannot walk daily like I used to which should help improve my bone density. Good luck with your healing and take care of your feet-they are essential for day to day living.

I'm 62, fair, small boned and thin.

I broke my foot a year ago, that started me on the path to Forteo after many tests, getting denied long term care insurance, etc.

I now am very careful about my shoes so I'm less likely to trip. In crowds I try not to wear sandals, go barefoot less, got a nightlight, etc.

I have trouble with bisphosphonates so my doctor put me on Forteo. Also have changed my diet some. Am doing what I can,

I once had a stress fracture in my foot. I was provided one of those hard orthopedic "boots" with the velcro closures to wear for about 6 weeks, and that took care of it. With the boot, I could walk, although I used a cane for balance.

I know the feeling, MaryKate. At 50, my ankle and foot pain are severe daily. Been to the podiatrist and even had my orthopod look at it. x-rays, MRI show nothing, so I get to "live with it". That's not easy to do while teaching. Even more frustrating is knowing that, with my knees, the tests never showed anything either - but surgery did. I'm tired of joint surgery and don't want to do it with the ankle/foot. Right now, I'm wondering how much longer I'll be able to walk.

Please read some of the natural remedies on this sight. You can reverse osteopenia, even osteoporosis without the drugs.

I am one of the ones who had stress fractures in my feet. It's been a year, and I am still slowly recovering. Not sure if the Reclast I tood 2 years in a row helped or hindered this recovery. I wore the walking cast on first one foot, then the other, to recover. But after that, the thing that helped most was putting inflexible carbide soles into my shoes. I am still doing this a year later, and it really helps. They are expensive but you can move from shoe to shoe. Also, get shoes with the most support and the stiffest soles you can. Don't let your toes bend or come up out of the shoe.

My physical therapist was also invaluable in adding inserts to my shoes for arch support.

Good luck! It's very discouraging to have this happen and to be kept from walking, when that's one of the things that helps, and is also one of the great joys of my life. Do your best to keep your upper body active, and try to swim or something for the lower half.

Don't know how I missed your original post in Sept. I also have osteoporosis of the feet. Mine is classified as severe and was diagnosed when I was having surgery to repair a fracture/dislocation of my 2nd metatarsal. I was 56 at the time (3 yrs ago). It's a tough diagnosis - hard to quantify because there is no dexa scan for feet. Xrays are the only way you can follow it. Oddly, the dexa of my wrist (same type of bone as foot) is completely normal. I have osteopenia of the spine and hip - but those scores improved after a course of Forteo that I have taken for my feet.

I also have a lot of pain when walking barefoot, so I always wear shoes. Custom cushioned orthodics have helped a lot. Pilates for foot strength and balance and as much walking as I can tolerate. I wasn't sure if I would every be able to walk properly again after my foot injury, but I'm up to about 4 miles at a time now.

As others have suggested, rigid or rocker soled shoes seem to be safest. My orthopedic surgeon warned me to never jump down from any height - possibility for heel fracture.

If anyone has any suggestions for follow-up to Forteo, I would love to hear your success stories.

I remind myself of that old saying:
"Feets, don't fail me now!"

Thanks for writing, Lynn. I have been wearing MBT's. They are great. I only have problems when I try to "dress up". These clunkers ain't perty! But I try to fit in with the crowd.
