I'm newly diagnosed with Osteoporosis, can anyone recommend a good book that I should buy covering: treatment of the condition including at least; drugs, nutrition and exercise particularly, from a fairly basis level.
Thanks

Quarryman,
I would recommend "The Myth of Osteoporosis" by Gilian Sanson. It has been a real eye opener for me.

Please check www.nof for NOF Boning Up On Osteoporosis which covers all aspects of osteoporois plus pages of exercise. For additional books that may be of interest, please place books in the Search. Scroll through the pages until you find my list of books. Hope this helps. Sandi
Sandi:
Thanks for stating the obvious -- the information from NOF and on its site is solid, readable, informative, and -- more important -- timely and up to the minute. it IS the "gold standard". Remember, books take awhile to be published and sometimes the some of the content is out-of-date by the time the book comes out.
Rather than spending money on books that may or may not answer your questions, spend some time on already credible sites here online. NIH, Mayo Clinic are others.
Lucy Buckley PT aka Mother Goose
STAND TALL! by Morris Notelovitz, M.D for general information written for the public. (Just to be totally open on this, I either wrote or edited the chapters on exercise.) However, I receive no royalties or financial remuneration of any sort from recommending this book.
I also like:
Better Bones, Better Body by Dr. Susan Brown
The Osteoporosis Solution by Carl Germano
Food and Your Bones (I can't remember the author's name at the moment.)
For exercise, I have written a book called WALK TALL!
There are more but I don't have access to my library here as I am traveling.
Hope this helps.
Be careful--it can be a minefield out there especially books and DVD's on exercise for osteoporosis. It is known that exercise and movement are good for the bones; therefore, the prevailing thought seems to be that anything you do is ok as long as you are moving. This is not a good message as some movement is contraindicated or, at the very least, is not specific enough to target the bones most at risk for the condition.
Hope this helps.
Food For Your Bones - Anne Marie Colbin (I have in my notes - skip exercise advice).
Thanks Sandi:
I couldn't remember the author. Great book on cooking, food, nutrition etc. You are right about the exercise chapter--it's fun reading but the advice is not sound. Her chapter on exercise, to me, is similar to me writing a book or chapter on nutrition--not my field.
