Hello. I too have osteopenia. Currently taking Fosamax plus D, caltrate with Vitamin D, and a multi-vitamin with D, for women all this for the past 6 yrs., along with my heart medications for the past 10 years. I was diagnosed after I fractured my left collarbone at age 51 with osteopenia. Took my fractured collerbone 8 months to heal. Do post any thing you want to say, rant or rave. Is your Dr supportive in your bone health?

Thanks for the info. Like i said i was just diagnosised on July 7th,2009 and yes my dr. is supportive. He told me to take caltrate with vitamin d as soon as possible. I fractured my wrist in Feb. of this yr. that is why he had me do the bone density test. So any info you can help me with i would surely appreciate. Thanks for your comment too.

Hello, countryangel,

I was diagnosed with osteopenia at age 55. (I broke a rib in a spill from my bicycle while I was pedaling out of my driveway.) Over the last 10 years, I have taken several bone building meds, but now take Evista.

My most recent bone scan shows that I no longer have osteopenia in my hips, but still do in my lumbar spine. I have made some gains in the density of my spine, though, so progress is encouraging.

Here's what I attribute my increase to, at least in part: In the last 2-3 years, I have become an avid walker and hiker -- I walk daily and hike three times a week.

A dying friend begged me to adopt her dog "JJ," which I did reluctantly, but ended up becoming very fond of the little guy. He's a 14 lb short hair mix, and thus easy to care for and manage. The best part is that he keeps me motivated to walk/hike daily, and I've come to truly enjoy these these outings together.

I believe that the walking/hiking has played a big part in my graduating from having osteopenic hips.

I would encourage you to walk daily for bone health. You might even find a partner to team up with, to boost your motivation.

Most importantly, have patience and trust that if you're exercising and eating healthful foods, your bones will eventually regain healthy status. They will.

Best wishes, and better bones!

I would love to walk, but 4 of the 5 bones in my left foot have fractured in past couple of months. I have had constant bilateral foot pain for over a year (prior to fractures) but did not know I had osteopenia, Vit D def, etc. until had broken bones. Could all my foot pain be caused by that? I cannot walk at all without shoes because the pain is so bad - bottoms of both feet. I had custom insole made and wear them in my New Balance tennis shoes everyday, but by late afternoon I can hardly walk even with the shoes. Please help! Thanks.

I supposedly have osteopenia too but am in denial

as I read about your fractures and broken bones ... I have no symptoms whatsoever and refuse to take those meds Actonel, Fomax etc

I am trying to put more calcium in my diet and I do walk a lot and exercise

Thanks for your response and information. I have started taking Caltrate with Vit D and it also has bone and colon in the vitamin. I would love to walk but i have a problem with my left leg. It has nerve damage in it and i stand all day at work. So i am really tired when i get off of work. But i will start trying to get out and walk. I really need to exercise more because i am diabetic, have high blood pressure, high cholestrol, and i have falling arches so i had to get me some support to go in my shoes. Plus after i started working for Wal Mart i found out that i had the last vertabrae on my spine the prongs were snapped completely off pushing in on my S1 and L5 nerves, plus a protruding disc. So i have back problems along with the nerve damage in my left leg. So thanks for the help and information i am getting.

I understand what your saying. I was just unable to believe that i had osteopenia so i to am taking more calcium and other vitamins to help build my bones back up. So hang in there ok
