Need To Know Whether Symptoms May Be From Boniva

0 Recommendations

Good evening members. I am asking a question on behalf of a dear friend. She has been taking Boniva for a couple of years. At times she will have some swelling of the lip from the inside, a bit of a fever blister, some tingling on half of her face, head will hurt, there are pressure points (as she describes it) in the face that are painful, swell up, and become red. All of these things occur on the same side. Not on both. She took her pill today and shortly afterwards began to have ALL of these symptoms back to back within a couple of hours. Whereas before, the symtoms came maybe one at a time during the month; one would come and go, then another and so on. She just dealt with it. Now she has anxiety because everything hit her at the same time. Has not spoken with a doctor.

Anyone hear of these happenings? Comments as to what might me causing these symptoms? I KNOW you're not doctors, so you may (if you must) defer from answering the "comments" part of my question. BUT you can have a go. She is going to make an appointment to see her doc, but it would be great if someone could offer her a few questions to put to the good doctor. English is her second language. She is brilliant, but is unable to express her brilliance in English sadly. She escaped from Iran after the revolution in 1979. She studied English here, and speaks well. But she wants to be articulate.

Can anyone help her out? Thanks all.

Lana: I'm not sure, but there's obviously an allergic reaction going on there. What other drugs is she taking that might interact with the Boniva? I'll go over to askapatient.com and see if I can see any reports of that kind of reaction. Certainly she should call her doctor and report it.

Hi Lana,
I agree with millie, but this sure is a mistery!!
I would have thought your friend had seen a Dr, or someone about this allot sooner!!

My Son and I are so alike when we take most types of meds, Herbs. Most react to us opposite of what there suppose too do!
I have found if I do take something. I take less, or nothing when I hear of the side effects.
My Daughter is like my hubby (her father), who never has a reaction to anything. She is not like her Mother or Brother.

I took a one month pill of Boniva, and felt like I had the flu for 2 weeks..Also for another month or so, I would get strange flu pains in different parts of my body!

For me, I think it was a blessing boniva made me sick, after reading all the side effects. I do not take any Meds for my Osteo. I do take the vits and all.
Although Vitimin K gives me leg cramps! go figure!!

I read your info about you. Your quite an entertaining writer. That said, I'm sorry for what you had to go through.
I think I have learned to ask Drs. questions, and try to find out info, about everything a Dr. thinks I should be taking/ Doing!! As they say, there Practicing!! I think that lets them off the hook mentally..

I hope your friend feels better and I would think she might want to stop taking Boniva, and see how she feels!

Take Care,
April

Lana: I read about 3 pages of complaints at askapatient.com and did not see this particular set of symptoms mentioned. There were complaints that debilitating pain and flu-like symptoms seemed to be one-sided (that is, centered on only one-half of the body). I know that some blood-pressure drugs cause angioedema (swelling of the lips and sometimes the throat). Is she by chance taking one of these?

Me, I would stop the boniva and monitor condition and that would give me an idea if I thought it was causing those nasty side effects or not....

I agree with Alli, I think the only thing to do is to stop the boniva and see what happens. From what I understand these drugs stay in your body for a long time anyway so she wouldnt have a problem not taking it for a while.
