I am a Geriatric Care Manager and a RN in private practice. In a wonderful example of not paying any attention to myself I just found out about the warning not to use Forteo for more than 2 years--read this information in a trade journal. As a result of being post menopausal, small boned, of Eastern European heritage, post 40 years heavy smoking, bedridden for many months while being administered IV steroids 10 years ago is is no mystery that when I began to recuperate I found I had shrunk 4 inches and was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. Could not tolerate oral osteoporosis medications and was being treated with Miacalcin nasal spray only until about 5 years ago when an Oral Surgeon wanted me to use Forteo in order to ensure the dental implants he was doing would "take". After discharge from him my gynocologist continued to prescribe this medication for me. It has worked wonders and I have built considerable bone mass and feel great. Obviously I have been using it incorrectly and wonder if any one knows anything about the effects of overuse (by 3 years) and what alternatives I might have. I have been trying to find a Dade County Florida endocrinologist who specializes in osteoporosis because obviously my GYN, Internist and Pharmacist have been allowing this to happen and are clueless. Does anyone know a South Florida physician I could go to for an evaluation and direction? I usually take excellent care of my clients but obviously I need some Care Management myself!!!
