My stressed out foot

1 Recommendation

Hey everyone. I hurt my foot and the doc told me I needed to stop weight bearing exercises until it no longer aches. Well... I haven't been on the treadmill or walking distances since I hurt it 3 weeks ago. I still go to the gym and do arm, shoulder and core exercises that don't require standing. HOWEVER... I KNOW that the weight bearing exercises help with bone density. I'm worried that I'm going to be losing the bone I gained from taking Forteo by not being able to walk and do weight bearing exercises for awhile... 3 weeks have already passed and I anticipate there will be at least another 3 weeks. Is there anything I should be doing or could be doing to help prevent losses from what I have worked so hard to gain in bone density?
I've injured the 1st tarsal.. no stress fracture yet... but the MRI showed signifcant stress/injury to the bone in that area.
Thanks!

I hate it when I cant exercise, I have back and knee problems so periodically I have to stop and give them a rest. Ive been 2 weeks now without being able to do very much. Im still walking every day but I cant do very much more than that.I certainly cant do any weight bearing at the moment.
Its very frustrating.

Oh, my! Yes, do stay off your foot until it is back to its old self. The minute you start on it again, and it is not healed, it will stick in that condition for a long, long time and become a chronic pain. I know how frustrating it is. I am suffering from a chest cold right now and can't do my regimine: yoga, cardio, weight-bearing exercises, morning stretching, etc. And, I am going through a happy but stressful situation here at home.

Soon, we will all be back to our old selves and the rest during our recuperation will pay many dividends--especially with injuries to the feet and ankles. We don't realize how much we need them to be in good health.

Best to all...juliemarie

Thanks for the encouraging words! Are you doing anything in particular to keep the bone density up while recuperating?

Hi Willie1:
How much stretching do you do after exercise? Tight muscles can contribute to foot dysfunction and improper weight bearing on the foot. How much activity caused this injury?

Well, at the gym the trainer would have me do stretches but they were primarily for hamstrings. I was training to hike in mountains and so he had me on the treadmill at a significant incline of about 7 to 11 percent at a rate of 3 mph. Plus, I was busy gardening and doing lawn work.
I read recently where worn out shoes can also contribute to foot dysfunction... I haven't replaced my workout shoes for a couple of years.
My physician said the MRI showed bone stress... but no fracture... although it feels like a fracture.
Woody, any advice would certainly be appreciated. I hate being so sedentary.

Hi Willie 1:
Why don't you email me at bebonestrong@sequoiahealth.com and we can discuss this further.
Woody

BE careful. I fractured a bone in my foot in April and still having problems. I did not fall or other trauma to my foot. My tendons and muscles were stronger than my bone. I am in PT and they do not want me to stress my foot, having ultrasound again for my foot.

Get your vitamin D blood test. Going into winter many folks don't get enough vitamin D when the sun is further away in the northern part of the country. Vitamin D is extremely important for healthy bones. If you are deficient in Vit. D, exercise will not be as successful in building bone.
