milk? yes or no?

someone please help. does anyone really know for sure if milk is good or bad for bones? i've read so many conflicting arguements, just would like to know! i love milk!

Hi, Ive just written a reply in the 'milking my diet' post.

Milk plus all dairy products are acidic therefore bad for the bones. Cheese is the worst of the lot. Almond milk is good because it is alkaline.

Think of calcium as GREEN not WHITE
Drink plenty of veg juice as it is alkalzing
Think GREEN... as in kale leafy greens cabbage lettuce turnip tops garden salads broccoli etc anyways that is what I am trying to do it is hard at first but you just keep on keep on trying!!!!!

Ok, I'm confused. I'm seeing conflicting info. about the virtues and the drawbacks of milk and animal protein. Medical professionals are always touting the value of milk and dairy in general for being beneficial for bone health. Who the heck is right on this subject??? Are there any physicians who can put me straight on this?

I have not met one Dr. (we have Dr. friends) that can say, they learned much about Nutrition in Med School!
Or anything Alternative.

The Dairy industry is VERY big, and of course there going to advertise, and say what ever it takes, to sell there product, and how Wonderful Dairy is for your Bones/body..

My personal opinon is, Its all about making more money!
The sad truth is, the little guy (so to speak) cannot afford to advertise!

Look how Soda, Cigarettes, and alcohol, etc. are advertised.
Do we see on Tv how great Greens, Veggies are for our Bones..No they can't afford to advertise.

Also when I go into google to find information, almost everyone wants you to buy what they are selling.
We can't believe everything we read on the internet, anyone can say what ever they want..
I find it very sad!
We have to learn how to weed out the profiteers.

I gotta go with the green ladies & gents. I ate cheese and milk as if I were a spokeswoman for the American Dairy Association. And my bones are horrible. I suppose it could just be genetics. But since my diagnosis, I've been keeping track of my urine acidity, and there's nothing like a little cheese or milk to send it through the roof (or into the basement, considering that the more acid you are, the lower your numbers are).

So I've switched to greens and fortified OJ. Don't know if it's working or not, but I'm trying to switch up my old routine (which definitely wasn't helping).

I found the following about milk acidity --

"pH and acidity
An acid is a substance which dissociates to produce hydrogen ions in solution. A base (alkaline) is a substance which produces hydroxyl ions in solution. It can equally be stated that an acid is a substance which donates a proton and a base is a substance which accepts a proton.

The symbol pH is used to denote acidity; it is inversely related to hydrogen ion concentration.

Neutrality is pH 7
Acidity is less than pH 7
Alkalinity is more than pH 7

Fresh milk has a pH of 6.7 and is therefore slightly acidic."

--So I'm sticking with drinking milk 3 times a day.

Blackgorilla, thats exactly what the endo told me, he said that during the day we dont only drink milk, the other foods (as long as they include lots of fruit and veg) would help cancel out the acidity, which is only slight anyway. He did say to stick to the low fat version though.
I am continuing to drink milk as part of a varied diet.
Its all so confusing though.

Unfortunately there is much more concern to drinking milk than just the acidity. Modern milk is void of so many of the nutrients that we've come to rely on for bone health.

Pasteurization alters the mineral content and destroys all the enzymes in milk. In fact, the test that's used to prove successful pasteurization is the absence of enzymes. These enzymes help the body absorb calcium. That is why those who drink pasteurized milk may still suffer from osteoporosis.

Milk alternatives that are not beneficial would be soy milk, and any that have added sweeteners. Most milk alternatives have added D2 which is synthetic and the body cannot process it. A healthy milk alternative is coconut milk.

thank you! I just read today that coconut milk is a good alternative...what about almond milk?

Before my diagnosis I only used soya (fresh unsweetened in place of milk) however my endo has told me that I should take my calcium supplements after drinking milk as the lactose aids absorption.

I'm not really happy drinking milk but force myself to drink several glasses a day of organic skimmed milk.

Seems this is another area that there is a lot of confusion about.

Almond milk is fine as long as it's sugar free. Better yet, make your own. There are numerous recipes on the internet!

I guess cow's milk is for cows, not people!!
