Does anyone have personal experience with Miacalcin Nasal Spray?
Exercise Arthritis Forteo Miacalcin nasal spray Fosamax Fever Osteopenia Hay fever Actonel Menopause Pain Rheumatoid arthritis Osteoporosis Evista
Worst Pills, Best Pills classifies Miacalcin as the weakest of the osteoporosis drugs. Their review of the research leads them to suggest that it has so little effect that it should no longer be prescribed. I do know that people who are allergic to seafood should not take it because it CAN cause anaphalactic shock. (Doesn't mean it will.) Further note: WP,BP does not recommend ANY of the osteoporosis drugs, with the LIMITED exception of Fosamax. They suggest using more natural methods of dealing with the problem such as life-style changes, exercise and Vitamin D and calcium supplementation. And they are not too happy with Fosamax. In case you are not familiar with this publication, it is a constantly updated digest of drugs done as a consumer service. It is sponsored by the consumer organization Public Citizen. Their panel of doctors and researchers is headed by Dr. Sidney Wolfe whom many of you may recognize from TV appearances. They do not accept funding from pharmaceutical companies. They have been ahead of the game many times, testifying against approval of certain drugs by the FDA and warning against use of some of them through press releases and subscriptions. You should be able to find a copy of their book in a public library or purchase one at a book store. It is worth your money. And no, I have no personal financial interest here.
I started using Miacalcin and within a couple of weeks started experiencing a recation similar to rheumatoid arthritis. First my fingers hurt when I pulled the covers up at night, then hips started to hurt, then ankles. I put 2 and 2 together and stopped the Miacalcin and the symptoms went away. However it took months for the joint pain in one hip to stop. Prior to getting off the meds I was experiencing extreme hip pain and felt despair for the first time in my life. I just want to add that I have food intolerances of cane sugar and wheat and the one hip hurts also if I OD on sugar. I wrote the mfg and asked if there was any sugar or wheat in the meds and they said no and would note my concern .
Nkerr,
I thought when you take Strontium, you will get a false reading, unless you stop taking it for awhile before the test, or tell your Test-taker you are taking it , so they can ajust for it?
If you did not do that , how can you really know if it has helped you?
Are there side effects to Strontium Citrate?
From what I'm seeing here, it might be better then the Forteo, and allot less money.
My Dr. said Forteo would cost me $850.00 amonth!
I have Medicare, and a Blue Cross/blue shield ppo suppliment..
I think someone said here to check what country the Strontium is coming from...Hopfully Not China!
April.
Hi Naomi,
Is Miacalcin hormonal? That is, could male patients benefit from it? I'm not holding my breath here, but I just had to ask! Thanks much,
Tom
Catwoman,
I have never taken strontium.
Were you taking strontium at the same time as the spray and at the time of the DEXA? If so, do the results take into account the adjustments you need to make when having a dexa while on strontium?
Marcy,
I have been taking Miacalcin (generic Fortical) for about 3 years... ever since the jaw necrosis problem was reported for bisphosphonates (I was on an IV form--Zometa). My last DEXA scores held steady with the previous test two years prior to that. So, while I did not see a gain, I at least was able to not lose more density. I do take Vitamin D and calcium, and exercise regularly. I have not had any problems with the Miacalcyn.
Does anyone else have any information on Miacalcin Nasal Spray for osteoporosis?
Thank you!
Hi NolaMarie,
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. No they did not adjust for my Strontium usage, but in all my research it seems that you adjust by approximately 10%, so people I've corresponded with feel that the score changes were still very good. So I'm quite pleased and will continue with what I'm doing. I know that the Miacalcin alone did not cause these changes, but I'm sure it didn't hurt. As we learn about this disease in our lives and our bodies responses we know this is a complex issue and there are many things that contribute to successfully treating it and living with it. The support of people on this forum is one of the things that help all of us searchers.

nkerr,
Your increase in density is impressive. Good for You!! As you said, you are doing a number of things, so it is not known whether it is due to the miacalcin, or the other things you are taking. I'm also wondering if the correction on the dexa was made for the strontium you are taking.
Miacalcin is by prescription only. I originally had my GYN write the script.
nkerr ... Wow, that is a great increase and so encouraging to others. I too use strontium citrate and thinking about adding the spray. Each one of our bodies react differently so great that it worked for you ..keep up the good work!!
OK, finally have my score results in front of me. Scores at age 54 and 56.
2006 2008
R Hip -2.2 -1.9
L Hip -1.8 -1.6
Spine -3.2 -2.8
My doctor was very surprised and please with the changes. Me too, as I was just hoping to hold steady. I do credit the strontium with a lot of the change, but know the miacalcin isn't hurting. I also drink herbal tea with a combination of herbs that my herbalist put together for me. I also take homeopathics. Have been drinking my morning Chai Tea with l/2 soy milk for several years. We have horses, so gets lots of nice exercise outside every day, rain or shine, hot or cold, they have to be taken care of. One of the books I like is Susan Weed's Menopause book. If I remember correctly it does have a bit about bone loss and options for help. I like her because she includes the herbal and homeopathic information if you are interested. Marcy, hopefully you will be like several of us who replied to you and not have any problems with the miacalcin. Keep us posted.

nkerr you mentioned you had a hugh increase by using the spray can you let us know how much.. that is amazing results and will help others decide if they want to try it. I would say your strontium certainly helped as well!!
I have used Miacalcin spray for over 10 years. My spine T Score is normal at last test. However, my hip is still osteopenia. My GYN has had me on Miacalcin spray since I was first diagnosed with Osteopenia. We are trying hard to prevent full blown Osteoporosis with Calcium pills and exercise and the spray. My Internest Doctor has said the spray is only effective in the first 2 years and I should go on Evista. However, I will check with my GYN in the spring and see what she states about the Spray. I can't find any info that it is only effective for 2 years. Definitely don't want to go on any other med. at this time. I have done much better on bone density test since I have used the spray.
From my understanding Miacalcin is used to keep from losing bone. It is something your body already makes so it is supposed to be safe. I dont think it claims to build up bone density but I had a 6% increase in my bone density after using this. I dont recall how long it took to see that increase. I know after a year on fosamax I did not have those results. I guess I just got lucky with the miacalcin. I really didn't have any side effects. It took me a few days to get used to using a nasal spray which I wasn't too keen on. I hope this helps.
I tried it years ago and had such swelling in the sinuses that I couldn't imagine I could have absorbed any of the med. Others Have written in this site saying they had allergic reactions too.
