Magnesium Malate - how to take more and not have diarrhea

0 Recommendations

I hurt all over but especially in my back and hips. When I take mag malate it reduces the pain incredibly well and calms me (I'm normally irritable/aggitated or depressed - it's very physical as my attitude is good, but, boy I don't feel good). Dr upped my vit D amount to 50,000 a week, so, I know the mental probs are probably partially from lack of D, but, the mag malate just makes me feel wonderful - no pain and clear headed. I'm having blood work done again, but, it's so obvious that the magnesium malate within 30 minutes makes me feel sooooo much better. But, here's the problem: at the other 'end' of things it burns horribly on the way out. Besides the almost diarrhea, it's just like acid...more than I can handle....y'ouch. The sustained release magnesium seems spendy so I haven't tried it. Has anyone found a way to take 1000 units without problems? I've tried 300 units in morning, 300 at noon, and 300 at night, but, it seems to 'accumulate' by the next day with 'the problem'. I get such incredible great pain relief I'd like to take a couple of thousand (and I when I did a couple of times the pain just went away), but, I don't know how to get the benefits without the 'other end' of the problem. Anyone have knowledge on this? Thanks! Jeeez, I feel like such a mess between the osteoprosis, the all over pain, and an on going lung condition where I keep getting resick (a completely different issue). I'm starting to read up on the the acidity thing as well as I think that is a lot of my base (no pun intended) problem. But, thought I'd see what people have to say about the magnesium malate as it's such a good pain killer. I want to stay on one topic at a time, but, it strikes me that my different health problems are probably interrelated, I'm just blurbing stuff out in hopes that someone has been through some or all of this and has answers. Thanks! it's so good to have caring, intellegent people working on health issues together....I was really feeling alone before I found this site.

I'd be interested in hearing the answer to your question. That appears to be a large amount of magnesium. Can you cut back the dosage?

LindaSS: Its always been my understanding if we are taking too much magnesium we will have diarrhea. So I would think you should cut down on the amount you take daily. However, I am certainly not an expert in this area and I am hopeful you will get some responses which will help you. Take care.

Linda,
Try magnesium glycinate---it is known for not affecting the bowels. I've used it before with no problems, and my body is sensitive to magnesium. The Malate form is known for giving people a lot of energy---athletes use it a lot. But my doctor says with any magnesium form to only take the amount of magnesiun that just softens stool and keeps you regular---any more is a waste as your body doesn't need it and the irritation from the excess causes diarrhea.
I take calcium citrate called "Natural Calm" and they say the same thing on the bottle. Usually I can't take the citrate form but this is a powder that fizzes in water and really calms me. So if the Malate form is working, just back up the dosage to where you don't get bowel probs.
good luck, Santa fe

magnesium glycinate - thanks SantaFe. Yeah, I know that I was taking way too much, but, oh, the relief was wonderful (it has been hard to not use magnesium as a pain killer). It's going to take a while for me to learn what to do right. Thank you all for helping me with my struggling ignorance and floundering attempts to stop the pain as well as trying to find answers for reversing my osteo. I'm working hard on what I eat along with EVERYTHING else I've been doing wrong and just didn't know any better. Read my post on acidity I wrote today. I had a break through on reducing my lung congestion (which I think the acidity I've had from eating all acidic food is related to PART of my problems with osteo - I list the urls I used as my 'food for thought' and what I did had startling results! http://www.inspire.com/groups/national-osteoporosis-foundation/discussion/t oo-much-acidity-of-the-body-being-one-of-the-problems/ ).

It's embarrassing to admit I've been so ignorant and still am (very much floundering around, but, at least I'm determined to learn). All self consiousness aside (very hard for me to do :), I can't afford to be shy about what's going on with me as I'm not in good health, so, I'll just keep blurbing out what I've been doing and what I am doing (and why) and eventually I believe I'll get all the answers from kind folks like all you who answered and ones 'out there' in google land (there's a lot of hype in the internet, but, then there's jems of consideration to not just be tossed out just because they're not 'mainline', but, look for more evidence if there's some merit to it). The other post I did that I referred to with the url to it, I tried alkaline juices for 3 days and I got a big surprize! So, together we can do what none of us alone can do and just REALLY appreciate you all and how kind you are (no one's told me to shut up yet or called me stupid - which coming from a disfunctional family it's nice to be able to speak my thoughts and feelings and not be judged). And I see that being active in questioning, whether questioning your Dr or traditional medicine and 'mainline' ideas, or any other ideas, are being supported (it's a take what you like leave the rest culture here) which is a comfort since I came from the 50's culture where you weren't supposed to question authority. 'complain', or, well as a female just be a good quiet 'little lady' and of course boys weren't supposed to cry. I think men here have a safe place to 'cry' all they want and know that we don't consider them weak. Thanks again.

Well, as we say in the south, Bless your little heart! Remember this, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. Just vent, read, and some of us will try to warn you if we think you need to think about something else before you do something. And don't consider it embarrassing to admit you don't know something. It stops the learning process in its tracks. You go, girl. (And also remember that some of us don't know any more than you do. Thankfully, there are a few professionals that drop in now and then and nicely straighten us out :).

magnesim in another type might be the difference. i do know that mag citrate is laxative ..and if you take 1000 mg then the partner calcium would be double that=2000 mg. pretty good dose of each there
AND.. ANY SUPPLEMENT TAKEN WITH ITS FAMILY-- IS MORE COMPLETELY UTILIZED. ARE YOU TAKING VIT D, PHOSPHATE AND CALCIUM --BORON AND VIT K==THE REST OF THE FAMILY OF MAG?

SO IT MAY BE THE'' UNUSED RAW '' MAG THAT IS BURNING. YOU SAID THAT YOU TAKE IT SPLIT DOZE. take less.

SOUNDS LIKE A LOT OF MAG BUT WITH YOUR FIND==IT IS WORTH WOKING WITH===I AM GOING TO TAKE MORE--FOR MY Pain==thanks to your findl.

Hi Betty,
SantaFe had suggested magnesium glycinate as she said it is better tolerated by the intestines. I don't know anything about other forms of magnesium (other than magnesium malate) for pain relief personally as I haven't tried them yet. If you try or use anything natural and it relieves your pain, let me know how it works out for you. The reason I use the Magesium Malate is because a few years ago I was hurting really badly one day in the super market and there was this little book about Fiber Myalgia and using MagMalate for it. So, that's why I chose it. It worked well for me for pain, but, I just was wondering if there was a way to get around the unpleasant ouch at 'the other end'.

If you google magnesium malate fibromyalgia you'll see info on it (I haven't read beyond a couple of web site entries so I don't know how good the info is). So, please don't go on just my experience as I'm not sure why it works for me. I just wish I could tolerate more of it. I'm going to have to do a lot of reading. Good thing I like to read! I hope you have good luck with finding pain relief.
