Longevity of medication?

0 Recommendations

Does anyone know how long osteoporosis drugs like fosamax stays in the body when you finish taking them? Does it depend on how long you have taken the drug for?

I have seen quotes of 1 year up to 10 years, and some even suggest that it never leaves the body?

When I asked my specialist she said "usually around a year" but seemed uncertain herself. Which makes me wonder if it is all guess work!

Also has anyone wondered if it can permanently change the chemistry of the body, making us more prone to conditions we wouldn't normally have got?

I look forward to any thoughts....

Hi Isaac,

Can I ask about your breathing problems? I have been having numerous tests recently because I too was experiencing breathlessness.

I have had heart scans, lung function tests, 24 chest tape etc... and all have come back (fortunately) ok. They have now come to the conclusion I have allergies and they are going to test for that. I have been given an inhaler for when I get breathless.

I have never been one to suffer allergies before and I can't help but wonder if fosamax is behind this?

Thanks to everyone who shares their stories it helps knowing we are not alone!

Kind Regards Loods

I am very sad to hear of the 10 year half-life of fosamax. I wish I had never taken the drug. My breathing problem still persists and I can only pray that God will intervene and give me some relief. What a devestating drug.

My T-score got worse on Fosamax, too, and some other team members have written to say the same thing. Did anyone's score improve on Fosamax?

Thanks PikaB that is very interesting. I wonder how they come up with these facts, particularly 10 years for fosamax? I think anyone considering these drugs should be told this before they go on them.

I was on fosamax for 18 months so it is somewhat disheartening to hear that time scale. I can't help but wonder what else it might do to my body during this time? It certainly didn't help my bones because my T-score got worse while I was taking it!

The informational literature accompanying these medications (or on a medication's website) clearly states the "half life", which is how long it takes for half of the medication to leave the body.
10 years for Fosamax
20 days for Actonel
4.6 to 25.5. hours for Boniva
etc.

If there is any specific medication you are wondering about, you can look it up.

Of course, a medication can produce a long-lasting effect on the body during the time it is active, and that effect might remain long after the medication is gone.
